Health Sciences High and Middle College (HSHMC) is a Charter High School in City Heights, San Diego, CA serving grades 9-12.

Job Purpose:

To provide students with professional nursing care to support their health and well-being. The School Nurse will support the school culture including promoting wellness and the prevention of illness.

Education-Based Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution;
  • Registered Nurse License;
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience as a School Nurse;
  • CPR Certification
Knowledge, Skills, Ability:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.   • Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with students, families, administrators, general educators, educational specialists, and support staff;
  • Communicate effectively orally and in writing;
  • Report to work on a regular and punctual basis;
  • Perform all other related work delegated or required to accomplish the objectives of the school culture and focus;
  • Implement relevant technology within the job functions;
  • Meet professional requirements of school/district and state;
Job Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Conduct assessments;
  • Interpreting health assessments to parents, teachers, and administrators;
  • Plans and provides nursing care for students;
  • Develop and maintain a regular caseload of students to support;
  • Effectively provide support to students in 1 on 1 or small group settings;
  • Maintains patient confidentiality;
  • Promote effective relationships amongst students and between students and teachers;

Collaboration and Communication:
  • Collaborate with teachers and other staff members to support student health;
  • Monitor students' health progress and provide appropriate feedback;
  • Collaborate with administrators, general educators, educational specialists, and support staff;
  • Communicate with families and parents to discuss academic progress when there are concerns and celebrations;
  • Update all necessary records accurately and completely as required by laws, HSHMC policies and school regulations;
  • Attend restorative conferences as needed;
Other Functions of the Job:
  • Demonstrate preparation and skill in working with students from diverse cultural, economic and ability backgrounds;
  • Encourage parent and community involvement, obtain information for parents when requested, promptly return phone calls and answer emails;
  • Participate in appropriate professional learning activities;
  • Participate in extracurricular activities such as social activities, sporting activities, clubs and student organizations as directed;
  • Other duties as assigned;
Working Conditions (Physical Requirements and Environment):

Regularly required to sit, stand, walk, talk, hear, operate a computer, hand-held learning devices and other office equipment, reach with hands and arms, and must occasionally lift and/or move items.
