Job Overview

Position Summary: The Utility role serves as an introductory position within the Machining Department. This position assists team members by executing various general labor tasks in roles such as Helper, Rack Person, Hook-Up, and Loader, while providing necessary support to operators.

Key Responsibilities: The following duties are essential to this role, with the possibility of additional tasks being assigned:

  • Assist in setup activities as directed by the operator.
  • Support operators in removing heaters after production stoppages.
  • Reposition items on the line at loading stations.
  • Clear trash containers in the Forge and Steel facilities.
  • Assist crane operators in connecting and resolving pit blockages.
  • Guide completed products from the take-away conveyor to the designated racks.
  • Switch exit ends on the conveyor when racks reach capacity.
  • Ensure all bundles are properly tagged with part and heat codes.
  • Organize and maintain all wood materials within the steel buildings.
  • Keep all bins and floors clear of loose wood and debris.
  • Load materials onto the coater and press racks.
  • Operate the pallet conveyor to position full skids as needed without halting the press.
  • Engage cycle push buttons as required.
  • Monitor for temperature changes and alert the operator or foreman to prevent mixing heats.
  • Confirm that materials have a Green accept tag before loading into the coater, notifying the operator or foreman if absent.
  • Identify unsuitable material conditions for processing through the coater and inform the operator.
  • Run sonic reject pieces during downtime and at the end of production runs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities: This position does not include supervisory duties.

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED) is preferred.
  • One to three months of related experience and/or training is preferred.

Essential Skills:

Communication:

  • Ability to read and write simple instructions, correspondence, and memos.
  • Effectively report data and job-specific information as necessary.

Mathematical:

  • Understand and perform intermediate mathematics, including proportions, physics, algebra, and geometry.
  • Read a tape measure and other measuring tools.

Computer:

  • Comfortable using digital tools, scales, and calibration systems.
  • Familiarity with digital self-service platforms, emails, and timekeeping systems.
  • Experience with Plex is advantageous but not mandatory.

Additional Skills and Qualifications:

  • Strong mechanical aptitude.
  • Ability to train on and/or operate a crane.

Physical Requirements:

  • Frequent use of hands or fingers for handling, inspecting, cleaning, and auditing equipment.
  • Ability to stand, walk, push, pull, squat, bend, and reach during shifts.
  • Utilize carts, dollies, cranes, and jacks for material transport as needed.
  • Climb ladders and stairs to access work areas at heights of 30 feet or more.
  • Navigating narrow walkways, confined spaces, and overhead mezzanines.
  • Tolerate temperature fluctuations due to weather and machinery.
  • Adapt to high noise and vibration levels in the work environment.
  • Comply with all PPE guidelines, including hard hats, protective eyewear, earplugs, and appropriate footwear.
  • Lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

Work Environment:

The Utility role involves working across various departments within the facility, frequently interacting with historical machinery. This position may require close proximity to heat, noise, debris, conveyance systems, and other potentially hazardous equipment. The role entails exposure to confined spaces, moving mechanical parts, risk of shock, and chemicals. The Utility person will navigate areas with high traffic due to material transportation, which may lead to vibrations and airborne disturbances. Caution is necessary in areas with paved and unpaved walkways, rail cart systems, open flames, and occasionally standing water.
