Job Summary

This position provides research technical expertise to the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service on freshwater mussel conservation and restoration activities throughout Atlantic Slope watersheds, with a primary focus on the South River restoration project.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct mussel broodstock collection, host fish collection, and assist with infestations, grow out, and tagging of mussels.
  • Monitor released mussels, count juveniles, and construct and maintain propagation systems.
  • Design and implement laboratory and field research in support of mussel conservation activities.
  • Collaborate with FWS and DWR biologists and work independently, communicating frequently with project personnel and the public.
  • Supervise others in the lab and field, and travel overnight and work on weekends and holidays as required.
Requirements
  • Experience in fisheries or wildlife management, environmental science, or a related field with demonstrated experience in conservation aquaculture, preferably with freshwater mussels.
  • SCUBA certification or ability to obtain, boater safety certification or ability to obtain, and a VA driver's license or ability to obtain.
  • Prior experience with freshwater mussels and/or fish propagation, leading independent research projects, and leading field crews and/or managing aquaculture facilities or labs.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in fisheries or wildlife management, environmental science, or a related field with demonstrated experience in conservation aquaculture, preferably with freshwater mussels.
  • Prior experience with freshwater mussels other than propagation, such as field-related work.
  • Experience leading independent research projects and leading field crews and/or managing aquaculture facilities or labs.
