Job Overview

As a Precision Manufacturing Specialist, you will be responsible for analyzing specifications, laying out metal stock, setting up and operating machine tools, and fitting and assembling parts to make and repair dies, cutting tools, jigs, fixtures, gauges, and machinists' hand tools.

  • You will study blueprints, sketches, models, or specifications to plan sequences of operations for fabricating tools, dies, or assemblies.
  • You will verify dimensions, alignments, and clearances of finished parts for conformance to specifications, using measuring instruments such as calipers, gauge blocks, micrometers, and dial indicators.
  • You will visualize and compute dimensions, sizes, shapes, and tolerances of assemblies, based on specifications.

This role requires strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently. You must be able to read and interpret drawings, follow routers, use simple math to perform basic calculations, and use basic handheld measuring tools.

The ideal candidate will have previous experience in a factory environment, a strong work ethic, positive attitude, consistent attendance, willingness to learn, and safety-minded approach.

Responsibilities

Key responsibilities include:

  • Analyzing specifications, laying out metal stock, setting up and operating machine tools, and fitting and assembling parts to make and repair dies, cutting tools, jigs, fixtures, gauges, and machinists' hand tools.
  • Studying blueprints, sketches, models, or specifications to plan sequences of operations for fabricating tools, dies, or assemblies.
  • Verifying dimensions, alignments, and clearances of finished parts for conformance to specifications, using measuring instruments such as calipers, gauge blocks, micrometers, and dial indicators.
  • Visualizing and computing dimensions, sizes, shapes, and tolerances of assemblies, based on specifications.
  • Setting up and operating conventional or computer numerically controlled machine tools such as lathes, milling machines, and grinders to cut, bore, grind, or otherwise shape parts to prescribed dimensions and finishes.
  • Filing, grinding, shimming, and adjusting different parts to properly fit them together.
  • Fitting and assembling parts to make, repair, or modify dies, jigs, gauges, and tools, using machine tools and hand tools.
  • Conducting test runs with completed tools or dies to ensure that parts meet specifications, making adjustments as necessary.
  • Inspecting finished dies for smoothness, contour conformity, and defects.
  • Smoothing and polishing flat and contoured surfaces of parts or tools, using scrapers, abrasive stones, files, emery cloths, or power grinders.
Requirements

Requirements for this position include:

  • A high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Previous experience in a factory environment is beneficial but not necessary.
  • Complete a certified Apprenticeship program whereby the employee can demonstrate experience using various tools, including but not limited to knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance.
  • Must be able to read and interpret drawings, follow routers, use simple math to perform basic calculations, and use basic handheld measuring tools.
