Job Summary

The Psychiatric Aide plays a vital role in the treatment team, providing support and care to patients in a mental health setting. This position involves planning, organizing, and conducting therapeutic activities, as well as providing personal care and nursing services to patients.

Key Responsibilities
  • Orient patients to the hospital setting, rules, and regulations, and provide a safe and supportive environment.
  • Perform as a companion for newly admitted patients, establishing rapport and facilitating social connections.
  • Take vital signs, monitor patient needs, and record observations in patient charts.
  • Participate in the treatment team, providing input into patient master treatment plans and assisting in planning therapeutic interventions.
  • Implement training for patients in developing self-help skills, such as toileting, feeding, and basic oral hygiene.
  • Maintain a safe and therapeutic milieu for patients and staff, reporting and initiating corrective measures as needed.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of approaches used in crisis intervention and assist in the evaluation of patient progress.
  • Admit, transfer, and discharge patients, assist in emergency procedures, and provide physical care to patients who require it.
Requirements
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Basic Life Support certification from the American Heart Association
  • Minimum one year of work experience in a mental health facility or unit, with experience in therapeutic activities and patient care
Preferred Qualifications
  • Minimum one year of mental health work experience in an acute care setting
