Job Title: Knife Operator

Job Summary:

The Knife Operator is responsible for safely setting up, changing over, and trimming the three sides of all books running through the binder. This role works closely with the Binder Operator to ensure high-quality output.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Read and understand work orders to verify correct bind type, bulk, trim size, margins, and run lengths.
  • Learn to interpret work order information and its contents.
  • Follow daily running orders provided by the Scheduling Team.
  • Communicate with the Supervisor and Scheduling Team as needed.
  • Set up machines and perform quality cutting that meets expectations.
  • Maintain high throughput by performing quick and efficient make-readies and job changeovers.
  • Inspect for quality defects to ensure quality standards are achieved.
  • Maintain accurate data collections.
  • Understand substrates, bulk, sig size, trim size, and specified margins.
  • Oversee all segments of 3-Knife operation.
  • Provide training to Bindery Assistants in machine operation and safety.
  • Ensure Bindery Assistants perform duties as necessary.
  • Dispose of waste properly.
  • Perform preventative maintenance, general cleaning, and upkeep of machines and auxiliary equipment.
  • Troubleshoot and perform minor repairs to machines and auxiliary equipment.
  • Assist maintenance personnel with machine repair.
  • Exercise initiative, ask questions, and look for ways to improve productivity.
  • Keep the area safe and clean.
  • Adequately communicate with the oncoming shift.
  • Perform end-of-shift duties, leaving the area ready for the oncoming shift.
  • Assist in training new operators and employees.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Requirements:
  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education or experience.
  • One year of previous manufacturing or related experience.
  • Ability to read and comprehend instructions.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as work orders, workplace, and safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Basic math skills, add, subtract, and ability to use a measuring device.
  • Basic problem-solving skills.
Preferred Skills and Abilities:
  • Ability to work with the following software packages or programs:
  • Effective email and electronic communication skills are required.
  • Ability to work with PrintStream & Flex.
  • Ability to work with the following tools or machinery:
  • Micrometers.
  • Calipers.
  • Scales.
  • Pallet jack and lift.
  • Ruler.
  • Hand tools.
  • Torque wrench.
  • Knife jig.
  • Zebra label machine.
  • Retractable knife.
  • Air hose.
  • Bandsaw.
Physical Requirements:
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. frequently, 20lbs constantly.
  • Constantly be able to work in the work activities.
  • Moving to accomplish tasks or moving from one worksite to another.
  • Communicating with others to exchange information.
  • Operating machine and/or power tools.
  • Work in noisy environments.
  • Occasionally be able to do the listed activities.
  • Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles, and the like.
  • Moving self in different positions to accomplish tasks in various environments, including tight spaces.
  • Remain in stationary position, often standing or sitting for prolonged periods.
  • Adjusting or moving objects up to 50 lbs. in all directions.
  • Repeating motions that may include the wrists, hands, and/or fingers.
  • Assessing the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of the work assigned.
  • Work in high temperatures, small, and/or enclosed spaces.
