Job Summary and Qualifications
Under the supervision of the Manager, Administrative Director, and Medical Director, the Clinical Laboratory Specialist performs diagnostic testing in various areas including:
- Blood bank
- Chemistry
- Serology
- Hematology
- Urinalysis
- Coagulation
- Special chemistry
- Microbiology
- Manual tests.
The Specialist is responsible for obtaining or receiving specimens, conducting laboratory tests according to established protocols, comprehending methods and principles, performing and assessing quality control on a daily basis, and notifying the Administrative Director or Manager of any issues.
The Specialist also conducts preventative maintenance on laboratory equipment, interprets results for accuracy, acceptability, and critical limits, organizes tasks to meet deadlines, and documents all data obtained.
Additionally, the Specialist is tasked with instructing MT and TLT students and collaborating with nursing and other hospital staff to ensure timely patient care.
You will evaluate abnormal results and initiate corrective actions as necessary.
You will apply troubleshooting skills to maintain the continuous operation of laboratory equipment.
You will ensure proficiency testing is conducted and reported in accordance with established procedures.
You will assist laboratory staff and patient care personnel in executing laboratory-related tasks and procedures.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology from an accredited institution and successful completion of a national certification examination approved by the State Board; OR
- Completion of three years of academic study with a minimum of 90 semester hours at an accredited college or university in a curriculum involving biological or physical sciences, along with at least 12 months of training at a school of medical technology accredited by a national agency, and passing a national certification examination approved by the State Board; OR
- A bachelor's degree in one of the chemical, physical, or biological sciences from an accredited institution, with at least one year of additional full-time experience or training in a specialty or subspecialty in which tests are performed, and passing a national certification examination approved by the State Board; OR
- Passing the examination for clinical laboratory technologists administered by the State of Nevada Division of Health Bureau.
- Current State license (or within six months of hire) as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist, General Supervisor is preferred.
Two years of experience as a clinical laboratory specialist in a large clinical laboratory is preferred.
Generalist experience in all laboratory areas, including the Blood Bank, is preferred.
