Job Title: Laboratory Medicine Supervisor

Geisinger Health System is seeking a highly skilled Laboratory Medicine Supervisor to lead our team of laboratory professionals. As a key member of our laboratory leadership team, you will be responsible for supervising a team of approximately 40 employees in a high-volume automated laboratory, producing over 8 million tests per year.

Job Summary

The Laboratory Medicine Supervisor will be responsible for planning, organizing, and directing the activities of the laboratory section to provide optimal, cost-effective delivery of services in accordance with departmental standards of quality, productivity, system-wide integration, and standardization. This includes supervising technical and administrative operations, selecting, instructing, and developing employees, conducting performance appraisals, and ensuring training and orientation of new hires.

Key Responsibilities
  • Supervise a team of laboratory professionals to ensure timely and efficient workflow in support of group practice quality and turnaround time standards of excellence.
  • Plan, organize, and direct the activities of the laboratory section to meet service demands and maintain productivity standards.
  • Conduct performance appraisals, ensure training and orientation of new hires, and evaluate employee competency in an ongoing manner.
  • Participate with the Lab Information Technology Team and doctoral directors to plan and oversee all laboratory information system functions in support of hospital and group practice work processes.
  • Ensure staff is adequately trained in all computer applications required for their positions.
  • Collaborate with the Anatomic Pathology Operations Director to plan equipment purchases and leases.
  • Supervise analysis of cost for materials and negotiation of contracts to obtain favorable prices.
  • Oversee section purchasing, receiving, and inventory management to reduce costs.
  • Assure section's compliance with applicable regulations and accrediting standards.
  • Actively support the Quality Program and take a leadership role in facilitating change to realize noticeable error reduction and service improvement.
Requirements

The ideal candidate will have at least six (6) years of clinical/medical laboratory bench experience as a Medical Laboratory Scientist/Medical Technologist and at least one (1) year of direct leadership experience, including personnel and mentoring responsibilities. Must have relevant bachelor's degree (MLS or MT preferred, but will also consider life science BS degrees if coupled with MLS(ASCP). Prior experience managing staff schedules, budgets, and regulatory requirements preferred. Strong organizational, LEAN, and project management skills required. Effective communication skills required.
