Job Summary

The Museum of Ventura County seeks a highly experienced and visionary leader to serve as its Chief Programs Officer. This key position is responsible for developing and implementing the museum's exhibition, education, and program strategy, ensuring alignment with the organization's mission and vision.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and lead the implementation of long-range plans for exhibitions, visitor experience, education, object collections, and programming, ensuring meaningful impact and sustainability.
  • Oversee the development of a clear, ambitious, and dynamic research-based curatorial, object collections, and programmatic framework, as well as an annual program plan that informs all curatorial and programming decisions.
  • Implement all programming, including exhibition development, staff engagement with guests, execution of festivals and special programs, partnerships for school- and community-based programming, object collections, and curriculum development for the education program.
  • Build and lead a program team, providing training, supervision, and mentorship, as well as empowering and supporting their leadership and professional development.
  • Develop clear and measurable program outcome objectives and evaluation systems.
  • Represent the organization and its program vision with community partners, schools, supporters, and the public.
  • Collaborate with the development department on funding proposals, reporting, and stewardship, as well as with the marketing team on outreach to support program activities.
  • Work with the operations and accounting team to develop annual program budgets and oversee their implementation.
  • Provide training content and expertise to support staff professional development and institutional knowledge on substantive issues related to the museum's work.
  • Serve as a member of the staff executive leadership team, communicate with the Board of Directors on program-related governance issues, and participate in organization-wide planning for growth and change.
Requirements
  • 10+ years' experience in program design, planning, evaluation, and management.
  • Bachelor's degree, plus graduate degree and/or extensive experience in early childhood education, child development, arts education, or a related field.
  • Proven leadership and people management skills.
  • Ability to balance strategic, long-range planning with short-term objectives and an understanding of practical realities and available resources.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and other standard office software systems.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Creative and strategic problem-solving abilities, and grace under pressure.
  • Great interpersonal skills and ability to represent the organization and work with diverse staff, Board, volunteers, and vendors.
  • Ability and willingness to jump in and do what it takes to get the job done, and to motivate a team to do the same.
  • Commitment to and genuine enthusiasm for the mission, vision, and values of the Museum of Ventura County.
  • Ability to work occasional nights and weekends in support of museum events and activities.
