Role Summary

We are in search of a seasoned corporate and commercial attorney to take on the role of Deputy General Counsel (DGC) within the SmartRent Legal team. This position is based at our headquarters.

As the Deputy General Counsel, you will oversee a diverse array of corporate and commercial legal matters, including but not limited to commercial agreements, strategic collaborations, and privacy issues. Additionally, you will engage in generalist responsibilities related to litigation oversight, employment law, SEC compliance, and other operational legal matters as required. Reporting directly to the Chief Legal Officer, you will collaborate closely with senior leadership across various departments, providing a unique opportunity to contribute to the success of a public company in the dynamic PropTech landscape.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the Chief Legal Officer and key stakeholders to facilitate SmartRent's objectives in a fast-evolving environment.
  • Oversee the commercial contracting process, actively engaging in drafting, reviewing, negotiating, and approving various commercial agreements.
  • Provide legal counsel on commercial issues, working alongside business leaders to expedite and refine agreements and associated policies.
  • Manage litigation processes with the support of external counsel, including preparing status updates, budgets, and necessary disclosures.
  • Engage in the management of daily legal functions, encompassing data privacy, intellectual property, and employment law matters.
  • Deliver timely legal advice to enhance operational decision-making, integrating legal insights into the business development framework.
  • Foster strong relationships and build trust throughout the organization, leveraging legal expertise and sound judgment to find practical solutions.
  • Implement legal technology and streamline processes to boost departmental efficiency and cost-effectiveness.
  • Work collaboratively with a diverse range of stakeholders to contribute to cross-functional initiatives and navigate complex legal challenges.

Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree and active membership in at least one U.S. state bar.
  • A minimum of 10 years of legal experience, including at least 3 years in an in-house counsel role.
  • Proven experience in negotiating and drafting intricate commercial contracts, along with managing contract processes across various operational sectors.
  • Experience in overseeing litigation and budgeting, including risk assessments and case strategy summaries.
  • Ability to work autonomously and strategically, emphasizing proactivity and client service in a dynamic business environment.

Preferred Experience

  • Familiarity with corporate governance, SEC compliance, and public company matters.
  • Experience with legal management tools such as Legal Tracker, Lexion, and Salesforce.
  • Knowledge of insurance program management, including underwriting and claims.
  • Hands-on litigation experience.
