Job Summary

We are seeking a dedicated Deaf Community Advocate to join our team at Anixter Center. This role is an excellent opportunity for individuals who are passionate about working with the Deaf community and promoting inclusivity.

About the Role:

The Deaf Community Advocate will work directly with the Deaf, Deafblind, and Hard of Hearing communities, providing advocacy, support, crisis intervention, problem-solving, short-term counseling, information, referral, education, and training. This position reports directly to the Community Support Manager and requires a strong knowledge of community resources and American Sign Language (ASL).

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide advocacy, case management, and information and referrals to clients and the general public.
  • Support and encourage client self-advocacy efforts and advocate on behalf of clients to ensure their rights and responsibilities are protected.
  • Provide information and referral services to members of the Deaf community, service providers, community organizations, employers, family members, and DDBHH individuals.
  • Offer crisis intervention, problem-solving, and short-term counseling to DDBHH survivors/victims of sexual assault.
  • Refer clients to appropriate community resources and provide ongoing support through case management.
  • Ensure communication access to all related services and accompany clients to court, meetings, and other appointments.
  • Develop and present educational programs and exhibits to DDBHH individuals, service providers, police departments, and other stakeholders.
  • Implement data collection procedures to document service delivery and demographic information.

Requirements:

To be successful in this role, you will need a minimum of a bachelor's degree in social work, psychology, criminal justice, counseling, or a related field and 1 year of direct service work experience in the Deaf community. You must also be fluent in American Sign Language (ASL) and have a strong knowledge of Deaf culture. A valid driver's license and eligibility to be an agency-approved driver are also required.

Estimated Salary: $45,000 - $55,000 per year, depending on experience and location.
