Job Summary:

A Superintendent is responsible for overseeing all earthwork, installations, and construction activities on projects. They supervise and manage field personnel to ensure successful project completion on schedule and within budget, maintaining the highest levels of safety, quality, documentation, and communication with all trade and field personnel.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Read and understand plans, specifications, and local building codes.
  • Read, understand, exemplify, and enforce safety policies and practices.
  • Schedule and document all required inspections, quality testing, or other compliance requirements.
  • Comply with and document environmental permits and inspections.
  • Complete daily reports, including units complete, safety reports, EEO meetings, and weekly unit cost worksheets.
  • Read and understand global project schedules and generate two-week construction schedules weekly.
  • Schedule and order materials, inspections, and manpower to meet and/or exceed project schedules and specifications.
  • Inspect work in progress to ensure that workmanship conforms to specifications and the adherence to construction schedules.
  • Confers with and directs personnel and subcontractors engaged in planning and executing work, interpreting specifications, and coordinating various phases of construction to prevent delays.
  • Maintain a general knowledge of equipment used on the job, including basic understanding of equipment limits and designed purposes.
  • Track delivery, use, and completion of rentals on the job.
  • Complete regular performance reviews for employees under their direction in a complete and timely manner.
  • Ensure employees understand the review, sign the review form(s), and are provided a copy for their own records.
  • Confers with personnel to resolve complaints and grievances within the workforce.
  • Complete 20 hours per year of continued education relating to the field.
  • Attend weekly Superintendent meetings and participate actively.
  • Maintain a professional attitude with owners, inspectors, public, and company personnel.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering or Construction Management is strongly preferred.
  • Those with an education and/or work-related credential from a secondary or post-secondary educational system will be given preferred interview status.
  • 5 years of Construction/Project Management experience in a civil construction environment.
  • Knowledge of Heavy Civil Construction processes and industry standards.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) and other computer skills.
  • Experienced in scheduling, ordering materials, field supervision, safety management, quality control, and budgeting of all phases of civil construction.
  • Strong attention to detail, including good analytical and organizational skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to supervise earthwork/site work construction projects from general plans and instructions given and to determine the proper amounts of various materials, tools, and personal equipment needed.
  • Ability to make minor repairs and adjustments to equipment operated.
  • Ability to read engineering plans and blueprints.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally with supervisor and crew.
  • Ability to identify potential issues ahead of time and be able to problem solve.
  • Effectively work under pressure and prioritize duties according to company needs and deadlines.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Display a willingness to adapt, learn, and grow, according to the needs of the company.
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation to get to and from work.

Physical Requirements:

Able and willing to work long hours, including day, night, weekend shifts as needed, and work outside of normal hours.

Able to walk, lift, reach, stoop, stand, grasp, balance, climb, kneel, crouch, and lift up to 50 pounds occasionally.

Ability to travel to project sites that are typically within a 2-hour radius of the home office.

Able to work in outside environments, being subjected to weather changes, noise, vibrations, and job hazards.
