Position Overview

The Judicial Security Specialist role is a civilian position dedicated to acting as a communications intermediary while delivering protective services to Common Pleas Court Judges, Hearing Officers, and other designated officials as determined by the Sheriff's Office. This position plays a crucial role in ensuring a secure environment for both the public and the individuals being protected. The Specialist may need to make swift and effective decisions to assist law enforcement when necessary. Responsibilities may include performing Security Officer I duties as required.

Key Responsibilities
  • Deliver close protection and other security-related services for the Judge and/or assigned clients.
  • Assist Judges/Clients in evacuating areas or sheltering in place when necessary.
  • Engage in defensive actions to protect oneself, the Judge/Client, and civilians.
  • Operate and maintain security, operational, and communication equipment.
  • Identify and report vulnerabilities and safety issues directly to the Sheriff's Office Judicial Security Operations Unit.
  • Complete various written reports, logs, or forms as required by the Sheriff's Office.
  • Maintain a positive public image while providing assistance to county employees and the public.
  • Safeguard and return all legally confiscated items to their rightful owners upon conclusion of their business.
  • Support Sheriff's Deputies with counter-surveillance and protective operations as directed.
  • Participate in advance protective planning and threat vulnerability assessments.
  • Effectively balance requests from protectees with the need to ensure safety and security for all.
  • Respond to emergencies to provide assistance, perform medical operations, and secure the site, which may involve non-lethal weapon deployment.
  • Execute all other duties, tasks, and special projects as assigned.
Qualifications and Preferred Skills
  • High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED).
  • Valid Pennsylvania Driver's License.
  • Must pass a pre-employment drug screening and physical fitness examination.
  • Must obtain PA Child Abuse History Clearance.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive matters.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Exhibit strong professional ethics.
  • Complete Act 2 Waiver training within one year of employment.
  • Maintain CPR and EMS provider-level certifications.
Preferred Experience
  • Six months to one year of relevant experience in law enforcement, executive protection, court security, or customer service.
  • Basic knowledge of criminal and civil law.
  • Training in defensive and security tactics.
  • Emergency Medical First Aid certification.
  • Firearms qualification.
  • Ability to operate X-Ray Scanners and metal detectors.

  • General computer skills.
  • Basic Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook skills.

  • Must be able to stand for extended periods, walk, and operate machinery. Requires clear communication abilities.
  • May involve lifting items up to 50 pounds and performing various physical tasks.
  • May require the use of non-lethal weaponry in emergencies.

  • Requires the capacity to perform all essential functions effectively.
  • Exposure to stressful situations and potential verbal or physical confrontations.
  • May require the use of protective gear and awareness of personal safety.
  • May involve long periods of standing and walking, including climbing stairs.
  • May involve exposure to low doses of x-ray radiation within permissible limits.
