SUMMARY:

The Registered School Nurse plays a vital role in addressing the health requirements of students in accordance with district policies and the guidelines set forth by the South Carolina Board of Nursing. This position is characterized by the following responsibilities: receiving general direction from the designated site principal while being accountable to the supervisor of school nurses for the development of district nursing protocols and plans. School principals may oversee and assess the nursing/non-clinical performance only.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Utilizes nursing methodologies to evaluate and monitor students and/or staff presenting with health complaints, managing chronic conditions, and collaborating with parents, healthcare providers, school personnel, and administration to promote the overall well-being and safety of students.
  • Conducts routine vision, hearing, and dental assessments following DHEC guidelines; provides referrals to parents for students when screenings reveal health concerns.
  • Administers medications and treatments to students based on physician orders and parental consent, ensuring accurate legal documentation.
  • Trains, assesses the competency of, and supervises Unlicensed Assistive Personnel (UAPs) appointed by the principal to assist with medication administration and delegated nursing tasks.
  • Processes Medicaid reimbursement claims using Frontline School Nursing Management software for direct nursing services provided to eligible students, ensuring proper consent is obtained.
  • Reviews and maintains student immunization records in compliance with state regulations, submitting necessary reports to SC DHEC, and attending annual immunization updates.
  • Acts as a resource for annual Bloodborne Pathogen Training in accordance with OSHA-BBP regulations and collaborates with local DHEC epidemiology nurses to monitor reportable communicable diseases.
  • Participates in Special Education meetings as requested by school administration.
  • Develops and implements Individual Health Care Plans (IHP) and Emergency Action Plans for students with specific health needs.
  • Engages with school staff, administration, students, parents, and healthcare professionals.
  • Prepares and maintains both paper and electronic records and reports, including health room visits, treatment logs, medication administration records, accident reports, immunization documentation, medical alert forms, and referral forms.
  • Ensures confidentiality of sensitive student and staff information.
  • Assists in identifying and reporting suspected cases of child abuse and neglect.
  • Educates students on proper health practices, including nutrition, exercise, and general wellness.
  • Takes responsibility for personal professional development and ongoing education.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned by the Nursing Supervisor or Principal.
JOB SPECIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

A minimum of two years of recent nursing experience in school nursing, public health nursing, or community health nursing with children is preferred.

Alternative qualifications may be considered as deemed appropriate by the Board.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

Current, valid licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse in South Carolina; must maintain current certification in cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR/AED) from a recognized provider.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read and comprehend verbal and written instructions, correspondence, memos, and workplace policies. Ability to effectively present information and respond to inquiries from staff, families, and students.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

Ability to perform basic mathematical operations using whole numbers, fractions, and decimals.

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to identify problems, gather data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret and execute instructions in various formats. Ability to analyze information and apply logic to address work-related issues.

OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES:

Ability to perform duties with awareness of district requirements and Board of Education policies. Proficient in using medical equipment and possessing basic pharmacological knowledge. Ability to assess emergency situations and respond appropriately. Knowledge of universal precautions and ability to instruct others. Strong communication skills, both oral and written. Proficient in operating a personal computer and related software. Demonstrates a collaborative attitude and professionalism. Familiarity with the South Carolina Nurse Practice Act and the National Association of School Nurses' standards of practice. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and build effective relationships with students, staff, and the school community.

Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, and depth perception.

Work is conducted in a school health room and/or classroom environment with potential exposure to discomforting and hazardous conditions such as illnesses, medications, and blood/body fluid exposure; frequent interaction with ill students. Limited travel may be required.

Nurse Salary Pay Scale

The terms of employment detailed in this job description pertain to full-time positions during the school year. Conditions may vary for part-time employees or those hired for less than a full school year.

EVALUATION:

Performance in this role will be evaluated annually in accordance with Board Policy.
