Library Assistant

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Library Reference Technician to join our team at York County, VA. As a key member of our Library Services team, you will be responsible for providing assistance with children and teen library programs, as well as technical and reference assistance to children, parents, teachers, and other patrons.

• Assist in scheduling, planning, and presenting Youth Services programs for infant, toddler, pre-school, school-aged, and teen library patrons.
• Assist in planning, publicizing, and conducting story times, Summer Reading Program, Battle of the Books, and other reading promotions.
• Provide technical and reference assistance to children, parents, teachers, and other patrons.
• Work at Tabb and Yorktown libraries, with a flexible schedule that includes evenings and weekends.

• Minimum of high school education.
• Experience working with children in libraries, schools, or daycares preferred.
• Excellent customer service skills.
• General knowledge of children's and teen's books and authors.
• Ability to exercise tact and courtesy when interacting with the public in person and over the phone.
• Personal computer experience using Microsoft Office Suite and the Internet required.

The successful candidate must be physically able to operate a variety of machinery and equipment, including office equipment, and be able to lift boxes of books and/or periodicals, and push and pull a handcart or other type of cart.

This is a part-time position with a flexible schedule that includes evenings and weekends. The successful candidate will be required to work a continual floating schedule as needed.
