KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide expert guidance and consultation on Materials & Processes program specifications for both intravehicular (IVA) and extravehicular (EVA) conditions.
  • Conduct materials selection, evaluation, and certification for custom and standard commercial spaceflight components, addressing factors such as flammability, toxicity, vacuum outgassing, corrosion, and stress corrosion cracking.
  • Establish testing and certification protocols and assess test outcomes for adherence to project specifications.
  • Offer expertise and review project documentation and schematics for spaceflight components to ensure compliance with established requirements.
  • Scrutinize vendor documentation to confirm that processes and procedures (e.g., qualification, specification, control, training, testing, acceptance) align with Materials & Processes standards.
  • Possess in-depth knowledge of both metallic and nonmetallic materials specifications, characteristics, and testing methodologies.
  • Prepare and present technical reports during project milestone evaluations.
  • Draft necessary Materials & Processes documentation, including certifications, process specifications, and test plans.
  • Engage with internal and external stakeholders at all levels, fostering collaboration within a team-oriented environment.
  • Participate actively in a culture of collaborative learning.
  • Undertake additional responsibilities as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS: To excel in this role, candidates must demonstrate the ability to fulfill each essential duty effectively. The qualifications listed below represent the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities required. Education & Experience:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Materials Science, Materials Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related technical field with 10-13 years of relevant experience, or
  • A Master’s degree in Materials Science, Materials Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related technical field with 8-11 years of relevant experience, or
  • A PhD in Materials Science, Materials Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related technical field with 4-7 years of relevant experience in materials and processes engineering, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

ESSENTIAL SKILLS:

  • Comprehensive understanding of NASA standards and material data requirements for spaceflight components.
  • Expertise in metallic and nonmetallic materials specifications, properties, and testing.
  • Proven track record of success in materials and process engineering, commensurate with experience.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: The position is primarily office-based but may involve both indoor and outdoor work depending on specific tasks.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to sit or stand for extended periods (90% of the time) and occasionally lift and carry up to 25 lbs. (5% of the time).
  • Familiarity with standard office equipment (PC, telephone, printer, etc.).
