General Role Overview:
As an Automation Systems Engineer, you will be responsible for the development, validation, and implementation of algorithms and transfer functions that govern the electro-mechanical functionality of industrial equipment, with a primary focus on metal rolling mills.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Formulate algorithms and transfer functions that characterize the electro-mechanical operations of industrial machinery, particularly in metal rolling processes.
2. Validate these algorithms and transfer functions through computer simulations of mechanical operations and/or analysis of empirical data derived from operational machinery.
3. Utilize validated mathematical models to design and implement software that generates control system configurations and operational parameters, facilitating advanced automated control of industrial machinery.
4. Provide regular, precise, and thoughtful commissioning status updates to relevant stakeholders.
5. Collaborate with the project engineering team to ensure seamless integration of software modules within the overall project framework.
6. Conduct and/or assist in simulations to confirm that project requirements are met.
7. Support client observation during unit and system testing as required.
8. Suggest enhancements to testing procedures to better identify areas where software may not fully meet project specifications for the assigned scope of work.
9. Assist in commissioning activities at client facilities as needed and authorized.

Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in physics, material science, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, or equivalent experience.
- A minimum of 2 years of experience in designing and/or commissioning process automation/software models in heavy industry sectors, such as steelmaking or aluminum production.
- Proficiency in high-level programming languages, such as C++, and experience with object-oriented programming in the Microsoft development environment.
- Proven problem-solving abilities and successful personal leadership skills.
- Strong interpersonal, organizational, administrative, and communication skills.
- Established positive working relationships with clients, suppliers, and other internal and external stakeholders.
- Demonstrated commitment to continuous improvement in assigned responsibilities.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office applications.
- Willingness to travel domestically and internationally, approximately 25%, sometimes with limited notice.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in physics, material science, mechanical engineering, or electrical engineering.
- Research experience in mathematical modeling, finite element analysis, or thermodynamics.
- Relevant work experience as a research assistant, intern, or co-op in related fields.
- Experience in designing and/or maintaining control systems for hot or cold rolling processes or metal strip processing lines.
- Background in international field engineering assignments.
