ROLE OVERVIEW:
The Physical Therapist plays a crucial role within a multidisciplinary educational team, focusing on identifying students with physical challenges and contributing to their Individualized Education Program (IEP) or Section 504 Plan. This position is dedicated to delivering therapeutic interventions that enhance motor skills, functional mobility, and ensure safe participation in educational activities. Direct engagement with students is essential, alongside collaboration with educators, administrators, and families to develop and implement effective educational strategies.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Engage in IEP and team meetings, including discussions with parents, to assess the necessity of physical therapy as a supportive service.
• Collect relevant information from parents, students, and team members regarding the child's motor performance in educational environments.
• Conduct thorough evaluations of students referred for therapy, utilizing various screening tools and standardized assessments to determine the need for services.
• Develop tailored therapy plans for students.
• Deliver both direct and indirect physical therapy within educational settings, coordinating interventions effectively.
• Advise on the selection and customization of adaptive equipment and assistive technology to enhance student mobility and safety.
• Monitor student progress, adjusting goals and interventions based on ongoing assessments.
• Modify school environments to improve student access and participation in educational programs.
• Provide guidance and training to staff and parents, including interpreting assessments and discussing the implications of developmental or sensory-motor issues on academic performance.
• Collaborate closely with classroom teachers and support staff to establish and maintain functional goals for students.
• Maintain accurate records, progress notes, and IEP documentation in compliance with organizational policies and state regulations.
• Uphold confidentiality standards in accordance with relevant regulations.
• Act as a liaison between educational institutions, healthcare professionals, and equipment suppliers.
• Supervise and mentor physical therapist assistants, students, or volunteers to ensure program objectives are met.
• Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, to convey evaluation results and goals clearly to various audiences.
• Ensure a safe and organized working environment for all staff and students.
ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS:
• Serve as a positive role model for students.
• Maintain confidentiality regarding interactions with students with special needs.
• Support the work of licensed staff members, including managing paperwork and supervising students.
• Adhere to organizational policies and educational regulations.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
• The role may require physical strength and endurance for lifting, carrying, and other demanding tasks.
• The position may involve occasional climbing and balancing activities.
• Frequent physical movements such as stooping, kneeling, and reaching are necessary.
• Exposure to hazardous conditions may occur occasionally.
QUALIFICATIONS:
• Must possess a current license from the State of Illinois to practice physical therapy.
• Ability to provide therapy to students aged 2 through 21.
• Willingness to travel within the organization and its associated districts.
• Experience in pediatric and special education settings is preferred.
SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE:
• Proficiency in selecting appropriate assessments and interpreting results.
• Strong communication skills for interacting with students, parents, and staff from diverse backgrounds.
• Understanding of typical and atypical motor development and school-based physical therapy practices.
• Ability to work independently while managing time and schedules effectively.
