Key Responsibilities
  • Preoperative Preparation:
    • Review patient medical records, surgical history, and consent forms.
    • Ensure sterile conditions and organize necessary supplies and equipment in the operating room.
    • Verify the surgical site, patient identity, and procedure to prevent errors.
    • Assist in positioning the patient on the operating table for proper alignment.
  • During Surgery:
    • Maintain a sterile field and assist the surgical team in keeping the area clean and organized.
    • Coordinate communication between the surgical team, anesthesia staff, and other medical professionals.
    • Ensure that surgical instruments, supplies, and equipment are readily available and functioning.
    • Monitor and document patient vital signs, as needed, and assist with emergency procedures.
    • Document the surgical procedure, including start and end times, any complications, and critical details.
  • Postoperative Duties:
    • Ensure safe transfer of the patient to the recovery room after surgery.
    • Maintain accurate records and provide a detailed report to the recovery team.
    • Assist with post-operative care, ensuring patient comfort and safety.
    • Dispose of used instruments and materials according to safety protocols.
  • Patient Safety:
    • Ensure compliance with hospital policies, surgical protocols, and infection control procedures.
    • Monitor the operating room environment for safety hazards, such as electrical equipment and anesthesia gases.
    • Participate in surgical team briefings and debriefings to discuss patient outcomes, procedural concerns, and improvements.
  • Communication and Collaboration:
    • Work closely with surgeons, anesthesiologists, surgical techs, and other healthcare professionals to provide optimal care.
    • Communicate effectively with patients and family members before and after surgery, addressing concerns and providing updates.
    • Report any incidents, complications, or safety concerns during the surgical procedure to appropriate personnel.
