The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Environmental Microbiologist to join our team. As a key member of our laboratory staff, you will be responsible for supervising and coordinating the activities of our microbiology laboratory, ensuring the highest level of quality and accuracy in our water quality monitoring and research programs.
Key Responsibilities- Supervision and Coordination: Supervise and coordinate the activities of the microbiology laboratory, including the supervision of laboratory staff, the development and implementation of laboratory procedures, and the maintenance of laboratory equipment and supplies.
- Water Quality Monitoring and Research: Conduct water quality monitoring and research programs to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and to support the District's wastewater treatment operations and water quality protection goals.
- Technical Assistance and Training: Provide technical assistance and training to laboratory staff, other District employees, and external customers on microbiological methodologies and data interpretation.
- Report Preparation and Presentation: Prepare and present comprehensive technical reports summarizing and interpreting microbiological results, and make presentations at meetings, workshops, and seminars as needed.
- Program Development and Implementation: Develop and implement innovative ideas for projects to improve understanding of District treatment operations and service area waterways, and develop microbiological training manuals and programs for laboratory staff.
- Regulatory Review and Compliance: Review proposed drafts of pending regulations for impact on District operations, and review current scientific literature as it pertains to District operations.
- Education: Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university majoring in microbiology, bacteriology, virology, biology, or a closely related field.
- Experience: Four years of experience in microbiology or a closely related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Substitution: Graduate study in an appropriate academic specialty may be substituted for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.
- Promotional Requirement: One year of service with the District as an Environmental Microbiologist or Associate Environmental Microbiologist, and civil service status in one of the foregoing classifications.
