Job Summary:The Operating Room Surgical Aide works as an integral part of the healthcare team, responsible for maintaining a safe environment in which quality patient care is delivered. Under the direct supervision of the registered professional nurse, the Pod Leader, and the Operating Room Charge Nurse, the Surgical Aide is responsible for the transportation of patients to and from the Operating Room and other locations.
Key Responsibilities:- Assist nursing staff in the rooms with patient care, including positioning and transfer of anesthetized patients, and supporting limbs during a surgical skin prep.
- Perform between-case cleaning to minimize turnaround between surgical procedures.
- Check the status of stretchers to ensure they are ready and available for patient transport.
- Maintain inventory levels of specified stock items in the Operating Room, according to established guidelines.
- Deliver specimens and blood products to and from the Laboratory and Radiology, as directed by nursing personnel.
- Clean Operating Room equipment at the end of surgical procedures, including surgical tables, mayo stands, ring stands, instrument tables, kick buckets, and IV poles, according to established infection control policies and procedures.
- Run errands as needed and directed by registered professional nurses and/or charge nurses.
- Collaborate with other members of the surgical team to ensure each Operating Room is clean and all equipment is in place.
- Perform shave prep on surgical patients, according to established guidelines, policy, and procedure.
- Determine specific waste type for proper disposal of O.R. trash.
- Maintain order and cleanliness in the CSR2 Soiled room, where linen, trash, and infectious waste are stored prior to disposal via CSR/Environmental Services.
- Communicate pertinent information regarding patient care concerns to appropriate personnel.
- Apply the principles of asepsis to maintain the integrity of the sterile field.
- Assist and collaborate with the Circulating nurse and Surgical Technologist to set up for surgical procedures with proper instrumentation, equipment, and supplies.
- Maintain confidentiality of information related to individual patients and patient care units.
- High school diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Satisfactory references.
- CPR training required.
