POSITION: Federal Background Investigator

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Conduct thorough federal background investigations and compile detailed reports in adherence to Federal Investigative Standards, applicable laws, and federal agency regulations. Manage cases across the designated geographic area and travel to various locations including workplaces, residences, and educational institutions.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • U.S. Citizenship;
  • High School Diploma or equivalent;
  • At least 1 year of investigative experience within the last five (5) years at the federal, state, or local government level;
  • Experience with Federal Investigative Standards;
  • Access to a reliable personal vehicle, valid driver's license, and a satisfactory driving record;
  • Willingness to travel for temporary assignments as required (by car or plane);
  • Must successfully pass background checks and complete all necessary training;
  • Ability to solve practical problems and navigate various concrete variables in situations with limited standardization;
  • Capability to interpret a range of instructions provided in oral, written, diagrammatic, or schedule form;
  • Proficient in reading, analyzing, and interpreting professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations;
  • Skilled in writing reports and business correspondence;
  • Competent in working within a Microsoft Windows environment, including proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Internet, and Email;
  • Current (within the last 2 years) Single Scope Background Investigation (SSBI) or active Secret level security clearance based on an SSBI, with the ability to obtain the required security clearance.
JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Conduct in-person interviews with subjects to gather factual information regarding their background and character, following agency guidelines and instructions.
  • Collect factual information from various personal and record sources to create a comprehensive report of investigation that includes all relevant details about an individual's background and character, in accordance with agency guidelines and instructions.
  • Travel throughout the designated geographic area to conduct investigations at various workplaces, residences, and educational institutions as cases are assigned.
  • Must be willing to travel within a 30-50 mile radius (or more) as needed.
  • Engage regularly with managers and representatives at contractor facilities, various U.S. Government organizations, and law enforcement agencies to foster and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Adapt to changing situations and environments as they arise, interacting with individuals from diverse backgrounds and socioeconomic levels.
  • Exhibit strong verbal and written communication skills, maintaining a professional demeanor in all interactions.
  • Workload will depend on the availability of cases in the geographic area.
  • Occasional voluntary temporary assignments in other regions of the country (typically lasting 2-4 weeks) may be required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
DESIRED EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION:
  • Training from the Office of Personnel Management for investigators.
  • Previous experience in background investigations supporting government contracts.
  • Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice or a related field.
  • Current Top Secret clearance.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Work is primarily conducted from the investigator's home office and involves travel in the investigator's personal vehicle to various field locations for interviews. Coverage area may require extended travel. Work hours may vary based on the availability of leads and may not align with standard business hours, including potential weekend or third-shift appointments.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Position requires intermittent standing, writing/typing, walking, sitting, and driving throughout the workday, which may include extended periods of activity.
