Coral Conservation Program Manager

Position Overview:
This newly established supervisory role will collaborate closely with the Executive Director and the Restoration Director at the Reef Institute to manage coral and educational initiatives. The primary responsibilities include mentoring staff, facilitating professional growth, and assisting in genetic management and fieldwork organization. The ideal candidate should possess a background in Caribbean coral care, especially in an ex-situ environment. In addition to supporting grant management, writing, and budgeting, this position oversees various operational aspects of TRI. The role is primarily land-based, with limited diving required, focusing on TRI's activities in Florida. Effective collaboration with partners from academic institutions, government bodies, and non-profit organizations necessitates strong communication, organizational, and leadership abilities. The position requires adaptability, creativity, and the capacity to establish strategic processes and partnerships.

Prerequisites:
- A minimum of three years of experience in staff oversight and management.
- Proven ability to mentor staff in accountability and professional development.
- At least five years of professional experience in an aquarium or research laboratory, with direct responsibility for the care of live coral aquaria, demonstrating an increasing level of responsibility and a broad technical knowledge base.
- Strong understanding of life support systems and water quality parameters for stony corals.
- Ability to identify and resolve challenges within projects and tasks in a team environment.
- Proficiency in Windows and Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
- Previous experience in coral propagation or spawning is highly preferred.
- Commitment to maintaining a standard of excellence and ownership consistent with the values of the Reef Institute.
- A Bachelor of Science or higher degree in a biological science or related field is preferred.
- Detail-oriented with a focus on growth and excellence.
- Must possess a valid US driver's license.
- Willingness to work some weekends, evenings, and holidays as necessary.
General Responsibilities:
- Oversee all managerial and coordinator-level staff, including the Coral Husbandry Coordinator, Education Coordinator, Water Quality Manager, and Data Manager, assisting them in leading their teams to achieve TRI's objectives.
- Provide emergency support for the Coral Restoration Director in coral care during absences.
- Guide the Data Manager in developing a genetic management plan for coral reproduction, collaborating on assisted fertilization and outplanting efforts.
- Support research initiatives at TRI.
- Assist the Outplanting Coordinator in creating a comprehensive long-term outplanting strategy.
- Mentor management staff in effective leadership and staff development.
- Perform husbandry tasks as needed, including cleaning aquariums, conducting water changes, maintaining life support systems, preparing food, feeding animals, and adjusting water quality parameters as a backup for other staff.
- Participate in all necessary meetings and calls to enhance work within the Florida Coral Rescue community.
- Collaborate with the Education Coordinator on outreach and educational materials.
- Work with the Coral Husbandry Coordinator to supervise volunteers and interns in their direct contributions to the Reef Institute's operations.
- Engage in the management of coral spawning and larval rearing activities, including night work and assisting the Data Manager in data collection and coral recruit care using microscopes as TRI advances in these areas.
- Involved in grant writing and management.
- Available for on-call emergencies at the facility.
