QUALIFICATIONS:
An Associate's degree from an accredited physical therapy assistant program at a technical or community college, college, or university is required. Experience in pediatric or school settings is preferred.

PART-TIME

REPORTS TO:
Executive Director of Student Support Services

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
Physical therapy assistants deliver services under the supervision and guidance of a licensed physical therapist for students with special needs. These services are crucial for the individual education programs as outlined by the IEP team. PTAs execute selected components of interventions/treatments, gather data related to the interventions provided, and adjust interventions as necessary to promote student progress or ensure safety and comfort.

Performance Responsibilities:
  1. Collaborate to establish individual goals and objectives for students based on prior and current progress, areas of need, and deficits to be included in the student's IEP.
  2. Under the supervision of a physical therapist, deliver appropriate physical therapy services to support the goals and objectives of a student's IEP.
  3. Identify environmental needs or barriers and propose recommendations for accommodations or physical modifications under the guidance of a physical therapist.
  4. Independently conduct both individual and group physical therapy sessions as assigned by the physical therapist.
  5. Monitor the student's response to interventions and consult with the physical therapist if modifications are necessary.
  6. Assist in selecting physical therapy techniques/media and in sequencing activities, adapting techniques/media as indicated by student performance and following consultation with the physical therapist.
  7. Document billable treatment times and provide necessary documentation for students receiving MEDICAID in accordance with school system guidelines.
  8. Engage in staff development activities for personnel.
  9. Attend staff meetings and other relevant school meetings as appropriate.
  10. Maintain and sanitize supplies, equipment, and therapy areas.
  11. Keep required documentation and data collection of therapy sessions.
  12. Adhere to the division's policies and procedures related to guidelines and instructional initiatives.
  13. Consistently demonstrate sound judgment in the implementation, planning, and follow-up of student therapy programs.
  14. Perform other relevant duties and responsibilities as assigned by the supervisor.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
The role requires the use of sensory skills to effectively communicate and interact with others through telephone and personal contact, as typically defined by the ability to see, read, talk, hear, handle, or feel objects and controls. Standing, walking, sitting, stooping, kneeling, bending, and crouching are regularly required. The employee must possess visual and hearing acuity sufficient to assess patient safety and ability. The role may involve exerting 20-50 pounds of force occasionally (less than 1/3 of the time), 10-20 pounds of force frequently (1/2 of the time), and up to 10 pounds of force constantly (2/3 or more of the time) to move objects, equipment, and/or perform medium to maximum transfer assists with students.

Evaluation: The performance of this position will be evaluated annually in accordance with the provisions of the Board's policy on evaluation.
