Lincoln, Nebraska, United States Department of Corrections Executive Leadership Full time

Overview

The Department of Corrections, Division of Juvenile Corrections, is dedicated to ensuring public safety through the management and oversight of youth entrusted to our care. Employees within Juvenile Corrections have the unique opportunity to make a significant difference in the lives of young individuals through diverse career paths. By employing innovative research and evidence-based methodologies, staff members foster enduring change that positively influences the youth of Wisconsin.

We are currently seeking Youth Counselors for our facilities in northern Wisconsin.

Position Overview

Under general supervision, this role entails performing security and safety responsibilities within a juvenile correctional facility. Daily operations may be conducted under the guidance of a Lead Worker. Responsibilities include supervising juvenile residents across all shifts to ensure the security of the facility, safeguarding institutional property, and maintaining the safety and security of staff, youth, and the public during approved off-site activities. This position also involves ensuring the physical needs of assigned youth are met in terms of nutrition, clothing, and overall health; providing case management support and other therapeutic services; and upholding order and discipline within the facility. Physical intervention may be necessary when dealing with aggressive or assaultive youth. Additionally, this role may involve managing the institution's Control Center. Individuals in this position may occasionally be required to undertake responsibilities of the Youth Counselor Advanced role, as directed.

Compensation Details

This position falls within pay schedule/range 05-31, offering a starting base salary of $33.66 per hour, with an additional $3.00 per hour add-on. Employees may also qualify for a temporary $5.00 per hour add-on.

Our positions provide a comprehensive benefits package, including protective retirement status. Future salary increases will align with the Compensation Plan, scheduled at intervals of 1, 2, 3, 5, 10, 15, 20, and 25 years. Differential pay is available for specific night and weekend shifts, and employees may be eligible for FLSA premium overtime.

A twelve-month probationary period is required. Salary upon appointment for current or former State employees may vary according to the Compensation Plan and Wisconsin Administrative Code.

Candidates without prior permanent employment with the State of Wisconsin in the last five years may qualify for a sign-on bonus of $2,000. This bonus will be disbursed in two installments: $1,000 on the first paycheck and $1,000 upon achieving permanent status (typically after one year).

To qualify for the bonus, candidates must sign an agreement committing to remain in the position for one year. If a candidate departs before completing the year, they may be required to repay the initial payment.

In addition to fulfilling and rewarding work, we offer a competitive benefits package that includes:

  • At least 3.5 weeks of vacation to start, nine paid holidays, and 130 hours of accrued sick leave that rolls over each year.
  • An outstanding pension plan with employer matching and lifetime retirement benefits, plus an optional tax-advantaged 457 retirement savings plan.
  • A Wellness Program.
  • Access to a free and confidential employee assistance program offering a variety of resources and professional consultation services to support employee health and well-being.

To understand the value of your benefits package, please refer to the Total Rewards Calculator.

The Department of Corrections may conduct pre-employment drug screenings. Any applicant offered a position requiring a pre-employment drug screen must successfully pass the screening as a condition of employment.

The Department of Corrections will perform criminal background checks on applicants prior to selection. Upon hire, all new DOC employees are subject to fingerprinting.
