Job Summary

We are seeking a skilled HVAC Technician to join our team at Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. As an HVAC Technician, you will be responsible for installing, maintaining, and repairing heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist in the repair and maintenance of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems, including the replacement and repair of valves, fans, motors, gaskets, filters, belts, fuses, controls, switches, gauges, tubing, and pipes.
  • Inspect and test heating, refrigeration, evaporative cooling, and air conditioning equipment and systems to ensure proper functioning.
  • Participate in adjusting and installing valves, thermostats, fans, pressure regulators, and pumps.
  • Insulate heating, refrigeration, and air conditioning system pipes, cut, bend, and join tubing and pipes, and repair condensate piping for various air conditioning units.
  • Participate in the repair and installation of duct work and chassis covers.
  • Inspect and repair hot water and forced air heating and ventilation equipment.
  • Cut threads and assemble pipe and tubing to other components of air conditioning, heating, and refrigeration equipment.
  • Perform preventative maintenance on equipment, including vacuum pumps, gas detectors, air compressors, meters, gauges, and torches.
Requirements
  • High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent.
  • One (1) year of experience in residential or commercial HVAC systems repair/maintenance.
Preferred Qualifications
  • HVAC Diploma, certificate, or equivalent.
  • HVAC System monitoring and controls experience, as well as PC skills.
Knowledge and Skills
  • Knowledge of basic methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning trade.
  • Knowledge of proper use and care of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning tools and equipment.
  • Knowledge of basic refrigeration, heating, ventilation, evaporative cooling, and air conditioning principles.
  • Knowledge of safe work practices.
  • Ability to learn to perform skilled heating, ventilation, evaporative cooling, and air conditioning tasks.
  • Ability to learn to operate and maintain a variety of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning hand tools and power equipment.
  • Ability to learn to install, maintain, and repair a variety of refrigeration, heating, ventilation, and cooling systems.
  • Ability to learn to identify and correct refrigeration, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning problems.
  • Ability to learn to work independently in the absence of supervision.
  • Ability to lift heavy objects and perform heavy manual labor.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Physical Requirements

Required skills most (5 to 8 hours) of a normal work shift: Climbing/Balancing, Crawling/Kneeling, Walking, Standing, Sitting, Bending/Stooping, Lifting/Carrying, Grasping/Twisting, Reaching, Pushing/Pulling, and Fingering/Typing. Running is not required.
