Position Summary
The Laboratory Technician plays a crucial role in the processing and management of specimens within a clinical laboratory setting. This position is essential for ensuring the accuracy and efficiency of laboratory operations.
Key Responsibilities

- Receives and verifies specimens, ensuring correct identification and requested tests.
- Assesses the adequacy and suitability of samples received for testing.
- Labels and divides specimens as necessary for analysis.
- Prepares specimens for dispatch to external reference laboratories.
- Disposes of specimens older than 7 days in accordance with established protocols.
- Centrifuges samples as required to facilitate testing.
- Organizes and numbers all specimens for tracking purposes.
- Inputs client and specimen information into the laboratory information system.
- Ensures the accuracy of data entered into the system.
- Responds to inquiries from clients or phlebotomists regarding specimen requirements and testing turnaround times.
- Maintains cleanliness of work surfaces according to decontamination protocols.
- Utilizes personal protective equipment as mandated by laboratory policies.
- Adheres to all safety protocols outlined in the laboratory safety manual.
- Identifies personal development needs and seeks opportunities for improvement.
- Engages in coaching and mentoring as appropriate.
- Performs additional duties as assigned by supervisory staff.
Compliance Duties
- Adheres to relevant legal standards, regulations, and procedures, including those related to compliance and conduct.
- Participates in mandatory training programs, including compliance and HIPAA training.
- Reports any concerns or suspected violations of compliance standards.
- Cooperates with monitoring and auditing processes.
- Engages in process improvement initiatives as requested.
Required Skills and Qualifications
- Strong verbal and written communication abilities.
- Exceptional organizational skills.
- Demonstrates accuracy and attention to detail in task completion.
Educational Background
- Bachelor's degree in a scientific discipline.
- Previous laboratory experience is preferred.
- Proficient in data entry and computer applications.
Work Environment
This position operates within a professional laboratory environment, utilizing standard office equipment such as computers, telephones, and other laboratory instruments.
Physical Requirements
