Automotive Facilities Inspector

We are seeking a highly skilled Automotive Facilities Inspector to join our team at the NYS Department of Motor Vehicles. As an Automotive Facilities Inspector, you will play a critical role in ensuring the safety and integrity of the automotive industry in New York State.

• Investigate and resolve consumer complaints involving automotive services, ensuring fair and timely resolution for all parties involved.
• Conduct regular inspections of automotive facilities to ensure compliance with all applicable laws, rules, and regulations.
• Examine vehicles and components to determine the nature, extent, and necessity of work performed, using appropriate test equipment and disassembling portions of vehicles as needed.
• Review and evaluate invoices, bills of sale, purchase orders, and related documents to ensure accuracy and compliance with written estimates and work orders.
• Act as a mediator between consumers and automotive facilities in cases where no illegality is uncovered, promoting fair and respectful communication.
• Gather, label, and prepare evidence for use in administrative hearings and court proceedings.
• Prepare narrative case reports of findings and make recommendations regarding actions to be taken.
• Testify at administrative hearings and may make recommendations to the hearing officer concerning appropriate restitution.
• May serve as an expert witness at court proceedings.

To be eligible for this position, candidates must meet one of the following conditions:

• NY HELPS: Five years of experience as an automotive mechanic, automotive diagnostician, or automotive technician instructor, which must have included diagnosis and repair of On-Board Diagnostic 2 (OBD2) Systems.
• Transfer: One year of permanent, contingent-permanent, or 55b/c service allocated to a G-12 or higher eligible for transfer and deemed administrative under Section 52.6 of the Civil Service Law.
• Reinstatement: If you previously served in this title or in a title otherwise transferable to this title, you may be reinstated pursuant to Civil Service Law.
• 55b/c Appointment: This position is eligible for 55b/c designation and candidates with 55b/c eligibility are encouraged to apply.

Appointees who work in the five boroughs of New York City or in Nassau, Suffolk, Rockland, or Westchester Counties will receive an additional $3,400 annual downstate adjustment. Appointees who work in Dutchess, Orange, or Putnam Counties will receive an additional $1,650 annual mid-Hudson adjustment.

These field positions are located throughout New York State and require extensive field work and daily travel within a designated region of assignment. Appointees to these positions will be required to operate a motor vehicle; therefore, you must possess a driver's license valid in New York State at the time of appointment and continuously thereafter.
