Indiana University School of Dentistry is seeking a highly skilled Dental Assistant to join our team. As an Expanded Functions Dental Assistant, you will play a vital role in providing patient-centered care and supporting the educational mission of our institution.

  • Takes impressions and bite registrations with precision and accuracy.
  • Develops and mounts x-rays, ensuring high-quality images for diagnosis and treatment planning.
  • Instructs students on taking x-rays, promoting hands-on learning and skill development.
  • Fits preliminary crowns for adjustments, creates custom temporary restorations, and places temporary restorative material in teeth.
  • Makes and fabricates temporary crowns, adjusts, and cements them in place.
  • Places and removes matrix retainers for alloy and composite restorations, ensuring optimal results.
  • Places resin and amalgam restorations, demonstrating expertise in restorative dentistry.
  • Finishes and polishes restorations, adjusts patient bite, and ensures a comfortable and healthy smile.
  • Performs expanded dental assistant functions, demonstrating correct procedures to students and promoting a culture of excellence.
  • Sits chair-side to pass instruments and support direct patient care, providing exceptional patient experience.
  • Confirms that instruments are sterilized and working properly, organizing them for procedures and/or surgery.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent (such as HSED or GED)
Work Experience
  • Completion of an accredited dental assisting training program AND 1 year of expanded dental assisting experience or assisting in a dental specialty; OR
  • 2 years of dental assisting experience AND Completion of an accredited dental assisting training program AND 1 year of expanded dental assisting experience or assisting in a dental specialty
Licenses and Certificates
  • Indiana X-Ray License upon date of hire
  • Expanded Functions Dental Assisting License if working in an expanded dental assisting capacity upon date of hire
  • Dental Assistant Certification if working in a dental assisting specialty capacity upon date of hire
  • DAANCE if working in an anesthetic capacity upon date of hire

Working Conditions/DemandsThis role requires sedentary work as well as extended durations of moving about the workplace. It requires the ability to move objects and equipment weighing up to 25 pounds, and the ability to discern between various objects and devices and to position patients. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.
