Job Description and Duties

Under the general direction of the Branch Chief, the incumbent will represent the Department of Transportation in daily activities with the Regional Water Quality Boards for National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit regulatory compliance; preparation of water quality assessment reports for Department of Transportation projects; oversight on water quality assessment reports prepared by consultants and provides guidance on water quality issues. Will ensure projects comply with the requirements of the Department of Transportation Statewide NPDES permit. The incumbent will also perform a variety of tasks related to the determination, mitigation, cleanup, and avoidance of known or potential soil and groundwater contamination, hazardous waste and additional tasks including conducting field surveys and limited surface sampling to locate, evaluate and make recommendations regarding paleontological resources on projects that include capital improvement, maintenance facilities, and operating right of way. The duties of the Engineering Geologist will typically require exercise of professional judgment. Travel is required. Must possess a valid California Driver's License when operating state owned or leased vehicles. Registration as a Professional Geologist is preferred.

Eligibility and Requirements

Eligibility for hire may be determined by your score on the Engineering Geologist Exam. For those who do not have current eligibility (e.g., transfer, permissive reinstatement, or voluntary demotions) and/or who will be new to state civil services employment, you must be on the state examination list to be eligible for these positions. Working Conditions

Position located in Marysville, Yuba County. While at their base of operation, employees will work in a climate-controlled office under artificial light. Working hours will be set sometime between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Periodic travel is required for fieldwork and training. Periodic overtime and overnight travel is required. During fieldwork, employee may be exposed to traffic, people, poor air quality, noise, dirt, water, uneven surfaces, extreme heat or cold and hazardous substances. Hazardous Waste Operations Training will be provided to employee that will aid in recognizing and minimizing threats to employees' health. Travel may require the use of state supplied vehicle that vary in size.

  • Possession of a valid driver's license is required when operating state owned or leased vehicles.

Possession of Minimum Qualifications will be verified prior to interview and/or appointment. Unofficial, original, or official sealed transcripts will be accepted and may be required upon appointment. Applicants with foreign transcripts/degrees must provide a transcript/degree U.S. equivalency report evaluation that indicates the number of units and degree to which the foreign coursework is equivalent.
