Library Assistant I

Saturday: 1 PM – 6 PM
Monday: 11 AM – 4 PM
Tuesday: 1 PM – 6 PM
Wednesday: Off
Thursday: Off
Friday: 2 PM – 6 PM
Position Summary
Under the supervision of the Library Director or designated personnel, this role involves performing various tasks to assist the Library Department in delivering excellent customer service and providing effective clerical support. This position is categorized as an entry-level role.
The responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Organizing and shelving library materials
- Providing customer assistance
- Setting up new library accounts
- Handling incoming phone inquiries
- Managing returns and checkouts
- Supporting volunteers and collaborating with other staff members
These tasks constitute approximately 95% of the role.
Additional responsibilities may be assigned as needed, accounting for the remaining 5%.
Physical Requirements
The following are examples of potential physical and sensory activities associated with this position:
- Bending, climbing, and balancing while retrieving materials
- Carrying and lifting items weighing up to 50 lbs.
- Utilizing fine motor skills for tasks such as typing and operating office equipment
- Engaging in activities that require hearing and vision
- Walking throughout the library and participating in various events
Tools and Equipment
This position may require the use of various tools and equipment, including:
- Computers and software
- Office supplies
- Audio/visual equipment
- Copiers and scanners
Work Environment
Work is primarily conducted in an office setting, with potential exposure to dust and allergens. Outdoor activities may also be required, which could involve exposure to varying weather conditions.
Qualifications and Skills
The ideal candidate should possess:
- A high school diploma or GED
- Preferred experience of one year in a related field
- Strong communication and customer service skills
- The ability to sort and file documents accurately
- Professional demeanor and the ability to interact effectively with diverse populations
- Attention to detail and a commitment to safety
- Basic typing and reading skills
- A willingness to learn the library's integrated software system
- The ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment
- Capability to establish and maintain positive working relationships
- A valid Texas Class C driver’s license
All candidates must successfully complete pre-employment processes, including drug screening and background checks.
