Job Title: Peer Counselor, Breastfeeding

Kapi'olani Medical Center for Women & Children is a leading healthcare provider in Hawai'i, dedicated to delivering exceptional care to women, infants, and children. We are seeking a highly motivated and compassionate Peer Counselor, Breastfeeding to join our WIC program team.

Job Summary:

The Peer Counselor, Breastfeeding will provide essential breastfeeding information and support to pregnant and breastfeeding mothers within our WIC program. This role requires a strong understanding of lactation and maternal health, as well as excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide basic breastfeeding information and encouragement to assigned pregnant and/or breastfeeding mother population
  • Attend breastfeeding training classes within three months of hire
  • Collaborate with healthcare professionals to ensure comprehensive care for mothers and infants
  • Develop and maintain relationships with community partners to promote breastfeeding support
  • Participate in ongoing education and training to stay up-to-date on best practices in lactation and maternal health

Requirements:

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Direct experience with breastfeeding at least one baby in the past or present
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and prioritize multiple tasks
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Six months of breastfeeding experience
  • Current or past WIC participant
