Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Head Start Teacher I to join our team at the Fairfax County Head Start Gum Springs Center in Alexandria, VA. As a floater teacher, you will work under the supervision of the Head Start Education Manager and be responsible for ensuring developmentally appropriate practices and curriculum are implemented in a play-based learning environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Implement developmentally appropriate practices and curriculum in a play-based learning environment
  • Ensure the safety and well-being of children, adhering to Virginia State Licensing and Head Start Federal Standards
  • Complete and report on developmental screenings and assessments through family conferences, home visits, and staff meetings
  • Assist with documentation for local agency, state licensing, and federal Head Start Performance Standards
  • Collaborate with county staff, citizens, and members of the childcare community
Requirements
  • Completion of two years of study and training at an accredited four-year college or university with major coursework in early childhood or elementary education, nursing, recreation, or a related field
  • One year of related work experience
  • Valid driver's license
  • Certificates and licenses required: Child Protective Services Registry check, driving record check, and Tuberculosis (TB) screening upon hire
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or higher in early childhood or a related field
  • Knowledge of preschool Head Start standards and Creative Curriculum/Teaching Strategies (TS) Gold
  • Three or more years of experience in a classroom setting
  • Knowledge of VA Department of Social Services (DSS) regulations in childcare facilities
  • Experience working with a diverse multicultural population
Physical Requirements

The position requires regular standing, walking, balancing, stooping, bending, crouching, crawling, sitting on the floor, reaching, squatting, kneeling, and twisting. Ability to lift, transport, position, push/pull, or move up to 50 pounds. Must be sufficiently mobile and possess a range of motion to perform repetitive tasks. Ability to react quickly to the physical actions of program participants and respond to emergency situations.
