Responsibilities:
- Assist with patient positioning and transfer, ensuring patient safety and comfort.
- Maintain current licensure and BLS certification, keeping written evidence on file.
- Participate in insertion of catheters and/or lines, draping, and prepping patients as needed.
- Demonstrate knowledge of anatomy and physiology related to surgical procedures and patient positioning.
- Use proper precautions when handling sharps and instrumentation, wearing personal protective equipment when scrubbed at the surgical field.
- Assure maintenance of sterile field until dressing is applied, x-rays are taken, or patient is out of the OR.
- Anticipate surgeon's needs for exposure, retracting tissues, or organs, minimizing tissue damage and visual obstruction.
- Maintain a dry surgical field using proper suctioning techniques and electrocautery.
- Use surgical instruments to clamp bleeding vessels, apply sponges or pressure effectively.
- Demonstrate knowledge of proper care and handling of specialty instruments.
- Maintain a neutral zone when passing sharps on the sterile field.
- Under the supervision of the surgeon, use ligating clips and demonstrate proper ligation and cutting of vessels.
- Perform appropriate surgical scrub procedure according to policy.
- Demonstrate effective knot tying techniques.
- Demonstrate the ability to utilize sutures or staples correctly to approximate tissues.
- Alert circulating nurses to any breaks in aseptic techniques and initiate correction as needed.
- Maintain current licensure and BLS certification on file at all times.
- Utilize and organize time between cases effectively to meet departmental needs.
- Promote and participate in hospital performance improvement activities, including data collection, interdisciplinary teams, and analysis and implementation of team findings.
- Develop individual work goals annually, evaluate status throughout the year, and report on accomplishments with next annual evaluation.
Qualifications:
- Surgical Assistant Certification required.
- BLS required.
- High School Diploma required.
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent - Foreign Medical school graduate.
- 1-year Surgical Assistant experience in area of specialty (Open Heart).
