Job Summary

The News Producer is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the newscast, including stacking the rundown, writing copy for stories, ordering graphics, coordinating live shots, and directing production staff, reporters, and photographers. This role requires prioritizing, organizing, and supervising newscasts while maintaining a working knowledge of current events, community issues, and contacts.

Key Responsibilities
  • Prioritize and organize newscasts to meet station brand and goals
  • Write clearly, concisely, and conversationally
  • Maintain a working knowledge of current events, community issues, and contacts
  • Develop original story ideas for daily newscasts
  • Work with anchors and reporters on story treatment and gather information for news stories under deadline pressure
  • Act as a leader in facilitating teamwork among staff members working on daily newscasts
  • Accurately and calmly handle decision-making processes, especially in the control room
  • Write and post stories and videos to the station's digital platforms
  • Train new Producers in the same role
  • Produce news documentaries, cut-ins, and other special programs as assigned
  • Participate in editorial meetings and make decisions on same-day and next-day content
Qualifications
  • College degree in journalism or a related field required
  • Valid driver's license and insurability required
  • Imitative and attention to detail required
  • Ability to write clearly and accurately with great grammar
  • Ability to work well under intense pressure and tight deadlines
  • Ability to maintain a positive work atmosphere by behaving in a manner that works well with co-workers, supervisors, and viewers
  • Ability to keep up with national and local news/weather
  • Ability to enterprise local hard-news stories
  • Computer knowledge including newsroom software, Microsoft applications, and Internet use
  • Ability to edit video and audio (knowledge of Grass Valley Edius a plus)
