Job Description

Overview

The Orleans Indigent Defender is seeking an experienced Staff Attorney to join our team in the Trial Division. As a Staff Attorney, you will be responsible for representing clients with felony charges in all phases of criminal proceedings, including arraignment, pretrial hearings, trial preparation, plea negotiations, trial, and sentencing.

Key Responsibilities

  • Represent clients with felony charges in all phases of criminal proceedings
  • Investigate and prepare assigned cases
  • Assist OPD leadership and other staff as directed
  • Comply with all legal standards and requirements

Requirements

  • ABA-accredited law degree
  • Demonstrated commitment to working with clients in poverty and from diverse cultural backgrounds
  • Demonstrated skill in legal research and writing
  • Commitment to national standards of criminal defense performance
  • Proficiency with word processor software and legal research software
  • Membership of the Louisiana bar
