Huntsville, Alabama, United States Blue Origin Full time
Job Description

At Blue Origin, we are working towards a future where millions of people live and work in space for the benefit of Earth. As a Systems Engineer III, you will play a crucial role in developing reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion.

This role is part of the Blue Origin Engines business unit, where our focus is on the design, development, manufacturing, and testing of engines and propulsion systems. Our family of engines is powering the next generation of rockets for commercial, civil, national security, and human spaceflight.

As a Systems Engineer III, you will be directly involved in the development and delivery of engine systems for the BE-4 Program. This includes various lifecycles of engine development, including requirements development and decomposition, technical trade study support, risk management, verification planning and execution, and other systems engineering-related activities.

You will adopt and advocate for system engineering and integration practices across fields and teams in areas of system analysis, design, or integrated testing. Your responsibilities will require a wide application of sophisticated systems engineering principles, theories, and concepts, as well as a strong understanding of other related subject areas.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Participate and guide system design and development at all stages of the development lifecycle, beginning with requirements capture and flow-down, through preliminary design, critical design, product realization, design verification testing, system integration, qualification, certification, and delivery.
  • Develop, manage, and allocate requirements and interfaces, ensuring that requirements are accurately linked.
  • Drive rigorous technical decisions through systems engineering activities in accordance with systems engineering standards and practices.
  • Support gated reviews.
  • Review verification records to ensure the appropriate rigor.
  • Ensure all aspects of the system are working to the accurate configuration.
  • Participate in engineering integration, analysis, and verification.
  • Act as the negotiator between multiple, sometimes conflicting interests to ensure the system as a whole is optimized.
  • Work with launch vehicle customers and test sites during all life-cycle phases of design, development, test, and launch.
  • Effectively communicate development status, risks, and challenges.
  • Track, evaluate, and report on system metrics.
  • Own engine-level trade studies.

Requirements:

  • B.S. degree in engineering or another technical field.
  • 5+ years of system development/integration experience.
  • Knowledge of current systems engineering and integration tools and methodologies, in a safety-critical environment.
  • Good interpersonal skills, ability to work effectively in teams, demonstrated execution and coordination skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead teams through direct authority or through influence.
  • Experience with systems engineering tools such as DOORS, DNG, Jama, or similar.
  • Experience with collaboration tools such as Atlassian's Jira and Confluence, or similar.
  • Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and contribute to a culture of inclusion.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 2+ years of experience with liquid rocket engines or propulsion.
  • Experience in Valves, Hydraulics, or Electrical Systems (e.g., Instrumentation, Power Budgets, EMC/EMI, Harnessing).
  • Experience in reliability, maintainability, and supportability analysis and execution.
  • System Safety analysis experience, including Failure Modes, Effects, and Criticality Analysis, Fault Tree Analysis, and Functional Hazard Analysis.
  • Demonstrated project leadership experience.
  • Demonstrated configuration management experience.
  • Experience with failure investigations.

Compensation Range:

CA applicants: $120,060.00-$168,084.00; WA applicants: $120,060.00-$168,084.00. Other site ranges may differ.
