Job Summary

Maintain a safe and secure environment for correctional facility staff, prisoners, and visitors. Provide custody, care, security, control, and discipline of persons charged or convicted of offenses.

Key Responsibilities
  • Direct and supervise prisoners, perform periodic prisoner counts, and maintain correctional facility order and discipline.
  • Provide care for prisoners, dispense and oversee meals, administer medications, and oversee prisoner hygiene and showers.
  • Schedule transportation for appointments and visits outside of the facility, transport and arrange transport for prisoners, and document all transports.
  • Patrol and inspect the correctional facility for contraband, sanitation, and orderliness.
  • Supervise and observe persons visiting prisoners, maintain records of institution's activities, and transport and escort prisoners to court and other appointments.
  • Perform the booking and releasing processes, provide training and leadership to other Correctional Officers, and report infractions of rules and regulations.
Requirements
  • Knowledge of Police Department policies and procedures related to correctional facility operations.
  • Knowledge of Federal, State, and Borough laws and criminal codes related to prisoners, detention facility policy and procedures, and Alaska standards pertaining to detention facilities.
  • Skill in remaining alert at all times and reacting quickly and calmly in emergency situations, writing and completing accurate reports and observations, and operating booking equipment.
Education and Experience
  • High school graduate or G.E.D. or a combination of 12 years of education and related work experience.
  • Ability to obtain CPR and First Aid certification within 90 days of hire and pass a required training program within a one-year probationary period.
  • Citizen of the United States per Alaska Administrative Code (AAC) 13 AAC a) (1) and 19 years of age or older at the time of hire per Alaska Administration Code (AAC) 13 AAC a) (2).
