The Psychiatric Technician plays a vital role in supporting the Registered Nurse in providing care to patients with psychiatric or chemically dependent conditions. Working under the supervision of the Nurse Manager, Supervisor, charge nurse, or RN on the unit, this role requires a high level of empathy, flexibility, and therapeutic communication skills.
Key Responsibilities- Observe and report changes in patient behavior to the charge nurse.
- Interact with patients therapeutically and participate in social and recreational activities.
- Assist in group therapy, patient teaching groups, and other group activities.
- Use CPI techniques appropriately and make rounds on assigned patients regularly.
- Respond to patients with empathy and maintain their dignity and confidentiality.
- Participate in unit-based process improvement activities and committees.
- High School Diploma or GED required; Bachelor's degree preferred.
- Relevant patient care experience in a hospital setting preferred.
- CPI certification required within 90 days of hire date.
- BLS required per policy guidelines.
Physical Requirements: This role requires working in a patient care area with potentially combative or self-destructive patients, including behavior control areas. Each employee has the responsibility to work in a safe manner, requiring walking, standing, lifting, reaching, handling of charts, supplies, equipment, blood, and body fluids.
