About the Role

The U.S. Department of the Treasury is seeking a highly skilled Taxpayer Services Specialist to join our team. As a key member of our team, you will play a critical role in providing expert advice and guidance to taxpayers on various tax-related matters.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist taxpayers in meeting their Federal Tax obligations by providing technical advice and guidance on individual income, excise, and employment taxes.
  • Conduct interviews with taxpayers to determine their tax situation, provide advice, and explain probable consequences of various courses of action.
  • Discuss tax law impact with tax practitioners and accountants, review books and records to gain understanding of taxpayer's financial status.
  • Confers with taxpayers and/or their representatives to explain issues involving the applicability of tax law, regulations, notices and account adjustments.
  • Assist taxpayers in preparing tax returns and explains the consequences of courses of action.
Requirements
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen or National and provide proof of U.S. Citizenship.
  • Undergo a review of prior performance/conduct and an income tax verification.
  • Must successfully complete a background investigation, including a FBI criminal history record check.
  • Complete a suitability determination at the time requested by the agency.
  • Go through a Personal Identity Verification (PIV) process that requires two forms of identification from the Federal government.
  • If you are a male applicant born after December 31, 1959, certify that you have registered with the Selective Service System or are exempt from having to do so.
Qualifications

Federal experience is not required. The experience may have been gained in the public sector, private sector or One year of experience refers to full-time work; part-time work is considered on a prorated basis.

You must meet the following requirements by the closing date of this announcement:

  • GENERAL EXPERIENCE FOR GS-05: You must have three years of general experience one year of which was at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-04 in the Federal Service.
  • OR EDUCATION: You may substitute education for specialized experience as follows: 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
  • OR COMBINATION OF EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION: You may qualify by a combination of experience and education.
