Clinical Nurse Specialist

GENERAL OVERVIEW


The Clinical Nurse Specialist delivers expert nursing care to patients, assists with diagnostic procedures, and provides essential medical treatments while overseeing the work of nursing staff.

Responsible for the management of medication samples and the completion of necessary documentation for patients and programs, the nurse must also be equipped to handle psychiatric emergencies.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES


The following duties represent the core responsibilities that the employee must be able to fulfill, with or without reasonable accommodations.


  • Administers medications, conducts laboratory tests, and prepares necessary documentation for clients as required.
  • Supports Utilization Management by gathering, reviewing, and approving Medicaid and non-Medicaid emergency mental health hospitalizations for clients across the Center's network.
  • Assists with laboratory tests, EKGs, and other medical interventions, while gathering initial health histories for new patients.
  • Collaborates effectively with law enforcement, outpatient clinics, hospitals, and other healthcare providers.
  • Adheres to the Texas Nurse II Practice Act and the regulations set forth by the Board, along with all applicable Federal, State, and local laws governing nursing practice.
  • Manages medication distribution in coordination with the Center's pharmacy, ensuring accurate records of stock medications and controlled substances.
  • Works closely with case managers regarding client care as necessary.
  • Educates patients on health-related issues and addresses their inquiries or concerns.
  • Prepares patients for consultations with prescribers as needed.
  • Maintains oversight of medication samples for designated units participating in the program through assigned staff.
  • Assigns nursing tasks to LVNs and unlicensed personnel of varying skill levels, providing guidance and supervision as required.
  • Engages in a multidisciplinary quality assurance program to assess and ensure staff competency, quality of care, error reporting, environmental safety, and thorough documentation.
  • Delivers comprehensive nursing care for patients with acute or critical conditions requiring specialized treatment.
  • Performs additional related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience

  • Associate's Degree in Nursing from an accredited institution.
  • A minimum of two (2) years of nursing experience, including at least one (1) year in a psychiatric, mental health/intellectual disability, or substance abuse environment.
Licenses or Certifications

  • Current Registered Nurse License to practice in the State of Texas.
Other Requirements

  • Must possess a valid driver's license and automobile insurance, be able to travel as required, and consistently meet the driving record standards of the company's insurance provider if using a personal vehicle for work.
  • Must uphold required credentials and mandatory training to comply with all State regulations and organizational policies.
  • Must be capable of meeting the physical demands to complete Nonviolent Crisis Intervention (NCI) and CPR training, including lifting up to 12 lbs. and supporting up to 55 lbs.; bending, stooping, and getting on and off the floor without assistance.
  • Nonviolent Crisis Intervention (NCI) is a recognized method for safe and effective behavior management. All staff interacting with consumers must complete NCI training facilitated by the organization's training team within the first 45 days of employment.
  • NCI training equips staff with the skills to safely manage aggressive or disruptive individuals, ensuring the best care and safety in challenging situations.
  • Depending on the assigned unit/program, candidates must pass a Criminal Justice Information Systems (CJIS) fingerprint-based background check and maintain CJIS eligibility.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing (BSN) from an accredited institution.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) is preferred. Language Proficiency Pay (LPP) is contingent upon successful testing, certification by the organization, and funding availability.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Responsible for supervising LVNs, Integrated Care Technicians, Recovery Support Specialists, CMAs, and CNAs.

  • Must have sufficient mobility for frequent walking, standing, bending, stooping, kneeling, reaching (both vertical and horizontal), and using hands and feet in various care tasks. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 40 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. The employee may need to transfer a consumer occasionally.
