Enhance your expertise as you engage in a diverse array of intricate surgical procedures within our expansive Operating Room Department, which features 18 suites and encompasses various specialties, including organ transplants, orthopedics, and neurosurgery, while adhering to established protocols and hospital policies.
Your responsibilities will include peer education, advocacy, maintaining a sterile environment, coordinating care, and upholding standards in accordance with the Association of periOperative Registered Nurses (AORN).
This full-time position requires five 8-hour shifts per week, with specific hours during the orientation phase. Post-orientation, alternative shifts may be available, including 10- or 12-hour day or evening shifts, along with approximately 10 on-call shifts monthly, covering overnight and weekend hours.

Key Responsibilities:
- Review daily assignments and understand surgeon-specific preferences and anesthesia requirements.
- Identify and prioritize individual patient care needs, considering age, physiological, cultural, and physical factors.
- Plan care based on the anticipated procedure, standards of practice, and physician preferences.
- Assemble, verify, and open sterile packs, sutures, and other necessary items.
- Maintain aseptic techniques and ensure electrical and environmental safety within the department.
- Adhere to required standards for patient positioning, skin preparation, counting, and verification processes.
- Remain with the sterile setup to ensure the integrity of the sterile field, assisting with draping and addressing any breaches in sterile technique.
- Prepare and update surgeon's preference lists to ensure quality surgical care.
- Communicate essential information during procedures and personnel transitions, including the status of surgical operations.
- Ensure proper utilization of equipment and supplies, returning them to designated locations after use.
- Collect specimens as directed by the surgeon, accurately identifying the origin of each specimen to the RN Circulator.
- Follow standard policies for specimen collection and complete Repair Worksheets for malfunctioning equipment.
- Demonstrate resourcefulness in managing supply levels and utilization.
- Assist the surgeon and assistants with retraction and suction as directed.
- Ensure proper handling and disposal of biohazard materials, adhering to universal precautions.
- Collaborate with the RN Circulator to guarantee the availability of necessary equipment and supplies prior to patient entry.
Maintain an organized sterile field, keeping accurate counts of all sutures, sharps, soft goods, and instruments according to established protocols.
- Assist the RN Circulator in optimizing room utilization by minimizing turnover time and reviewing scheduled procedural times.
- Ensure all instruments are returned to Decontamination with appropriate documentation.
Education Requirements:
For candidates hired prior to August 1, 2015, completion of a Surgical Technology Program accredited by CAAHEP or ABHES, or a military surgical technology program is required. Alternatively, a Licensed Practical Nurse qualification will suffice.
For those hired on or after August 1, 2015, completion of a CAAHEP or ABHES accredited Surgical Technology Program is mandatory. A military surgical technology program will also meet the educational requirement. Certification as a Surgical Technologist waives the educational requirement for hire.
Acceptable certifications include TS-C (through the National Center for Competency Training) or CST (through the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting).
Certifications:
Certification is preferred for candidates from accredited surgical technology programs. Certification (CST, TS-C) is required for candidates who have not completed an accredited Surgical Technology program.
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) is also required.

Work Experience:
A minimum of two years of experience in a multi-disciplinary operating room or acute care hospital setting is preferred.
Physical Requirements:
The workload is demanding and necessitates constant lifting and moving of patients, equipment, instrument trays, and supplies.
Candidates must be able to lift items up to 50 pounds independently and over 50 pounds with assistance.
Stooping, pushing, and pulling are required when positioning patients or equipment for surgery.
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, prioritize multiple assignments/projects, and respond to numerous requests; ability to resolve conflicts among staff and collaborate effectively with department directors, physicians, and other healthcare team members; ability to ensure operational efficiency; ability to problem-solve and make decisions; ability to exercise self-control and manage stress when faced with multiple requests and/or conflicting demands from various customers.
Minimal sustained direction is needed to assess workload, direct staff, and fulfill departmental and professional responsibilities; candidates should be self-starting and self-motivating; working hours may exceed eight (8) hours per day based on the needs of the daily surgical schedule.
Personal Protective Equipment:
Adherence to Standard Precautions using personal protective equipment is required for procedures.
