POSITION SUMMARY

We are seeking a skilled and motivated Financial Controller to enhance our financial operations. The Hip Hop Museum (THHM) is a dynamic non-profit organization looking for a candidate who is either currently in a Controller role or is aspiring to step into this position.

The ideal candidate will be a proactive and experienced accounting professional who can effectively manage and oversee all financial, accounting, and reporting functions.

Reporting directly to the CFO, the Financial Controller will play a crucial role in preparing presentations for the board's finance and audit committee while collaborating closely with the senior leadership team.

The candidate should possess a strong understanding of accounting principles and contribute to the efficient functioning of the finance department.

Our preferred candidate should be ready to engage immediately, thrive in a collaborative environment, and demonstrate initiative as required.

The Financial Controller will oversee daily financial operations and will have the opportunity to lead a team as the accounting department expands.

Key responsibilities encompass various accounting functions, including oversight of accounting, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and grants administration.

The Financial Controller will ensure that THHM has robust systems and procedures in place to facilitate effective program implementation and conduct seamless audits.

Collaboration with program leaders and their teams will be essential, not only to educate them on finance and accounting procedures but also to explore how the finance function can enhance program operations.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES (including but not limited to)
Finance and Accounting Leadership

  • Supervise all accounts, ledgers, and reporting systems to ensure compliance with GAAP standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Maintain internal controls and safeguards for revenue receipt, cost management, and program budgets versus actual expenditures.
  • Coordinate all internal and external audit activities.
  • Analyze financial data consistently and present financial reports accurately and timely; communicate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements; monitor progress and changes while keeping senior leadership informed of THHM's financial status.
  • Assist in the annual budgeting and planning process; administer and review all financial plans, comparing actual results to identify, explain, and correct variances as necessary.
  • Engage with the appropriate board committees (e.g., audit and finance) regarding trends and issues in financial operating models.
  • Oversee all financial, project/program, and grants accounting; ensure expenditures align with grant and program budgets throughout the funding period; compile financial reporting materials for government, corporate, and foundation grants.
  • Manage organizational cash flow forecasting in partnership with program directors and continuously collaborate to assess the financial efficacy of program operations while establishing finance and administrative systems to support these operations.
  • Manage and track the performance of invested assets in accordance with policies and investment guidelines.

Team Leadership

  • Leverage the strengths of finance team members, clarify roles and responsibilities, and develop training programs to maximize individual and organizational goals.
  • Provide leadership in enhancing internal communications with staff at all levels; create and promote a positive and supportive work environment.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Integrity, credibility, strong acumen, and unwavering commitment to THHM's mission; a proactive, hands-on strategic thinker who will partner with the Executive Director in finance responsibilities.
  • Solid experience in coordinating audit activities and managing reporting, budget development and analysis, accounts payable and receivable, general ledger, payroll, and investment accounting.
  • A proven track record in grants management related to compliance and reporting for government, corporate, and foundation grants is essential.
  • Technologically adept with experience in selecting and overseeing software installations and managing vendor relationships; advanced knowledge of accounting and reporting software.
  • Commitment to recruiting, mentoring, training, and retaining a diverse team; foresight and ability to delegate effectively.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills that facilitate strategic data interpretation.
  • Demonstrated ability to forecast, accounting GL skills, and design and implement business processes.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; experience in effectively conveying key data, including presentations to senior leadership, board members, or external partners.
  • Ability and desire to translate complex financial concepts to individuals at all levels, including finance and non-finance managers.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • Minimum of a BA; CPA and/or MBA preferred.
  • This is an exceptional opportunity for a seasoned leader with seven to ten years of accounting and finance experience, ideally starting in accounting and audit, followed by experience in gathering, evaluating, presenting, and reporting financial information to executive teams and external stakeholders.
  • The ideal candidate will have corporate, non-profit, and government experience with demonstrated success.
  • Financial management of multiple programs and projects is essential.
