Job Description

This role offers an opportunity to make a meaningful difference in the lives of children and their families. As a Child Life Specialist at Corewell Health, you will be responsible for providing therapeutic play opportunities and assisting children with coping skills before, during, and after medical procedures.

Responsibilities:
  • Assessment and Intervention

You will assess children and families at various stress points throughout their healthcare experience, identifying relevant data regarding the child and family to develop a comprehensive assessment and initiate a plan of care.

Play Facilitation and Education

Facilitate play and familiar life experiences to encourage expression, process information, and promote development. Evaluate and document assessments, goals, interventions, outcomes, and significant events.

Coping Skills and Preparation

Utilizing evidence-based best practices, facilitate preparation for challenging situations with children and families, minimizing fear and anxiety and promoting mastery of their experience.

Community Outreach and Staff Education

Provide educational opportunities and resources that are responsive to the needs of children and families, promoting learning and mastery. Educate staff, students, volunteers, and the community about the unique needs of children and families, fostering appropriate and positive interactions throughout the healthcare experience.

Collaboration and Leadership

Collaborate with the healthcare team to enhance communication, foster Patient and Family-Centered Care, and maximize positive outcomes. Act as a resource for volunteers and provide direction/feedback as needed.

Department Maintenance and Resources

Maintain toys, supplies, play areas, and waiting areas by following toy cleaning and safety processes. Identify available resources and promote relationships with community organizations to assist with fiscally responsible purchases and donations.

Requirements:
  • Education and Certification

A Bachelor's Degree in Therapeutic Recreation, Child Development, or a related field is required. Successful completion of a Child Life internship under the direct supervision of a Certified Child Life Specialist is also necessary.

Certification and Licensure

CRT-Child Life Specialist (CCLS) certification from the Child Life Certification Commission is required within one year of employment.

Compensation and Benefits:

The estimated salary for this role is $65,000 - $85,000 per year, depending on experience. Corewell Health offers a comprehensive benefits package, including health insurance, retirement plans, paid time off, and more.
