POSITION OVERVIEW

At The Foundation Schools, our educators utilize specialized teaching methodologies to deliver exceptional instruction that ensures students achieve mastery of the designated curriculum while fostering their social, emotional, and cognitive development. As primary educators in a self-contained classroom, teachers are expected to comprehend and implement each student's Individualized Education Program (IEP) requirements. They are adept at providing tailored instruction and modifying educational content to align with the unique needs outlined in the students' IEPs. Furthermore, teachers effectively manage classroom behavior through established behavior management systems, adhering to school policies and procedures.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Utilize specialized educational strategies to facilitate quality instruction that promotes students' academic growth and emotional development.
  • Exhibit proficiency in academic subjects and effectively deliver content using the approved curriculum.
  • Engage in professional communication with parents and guardians regarding students' academic and behavioral progress as necessary.
  • Design and execute lesson plans incorporating diverse teaching methodologies, including technology integration, direct instruction, independent study, and collaborative learning, to enhance student engagement and participation.
  • Adapt the classroom environment, activities, teaching styles, and behavior management techniques to accommodate the varying academic levels and learning preferences of students.
  • Establish clear learning expectations and create a structured classroom environment that encourages active participation and appropriate behavior.
  • Employ formal and informal assessment tools to identify students' needs, adjusting interventions and instructional practices accordingly; evaluate the effectiveness of instruction and make necessary modifications based on data and feedback.
  • Maintain a safe, structured, and stimulating classroom atmosphere conducive to learning.
  • Keep an accurate inventory of classroom instructional materials at all times.
  • Demonstrate a thorough understanding of special education laws and regulations, including IDEA, FERPA, COMAR, and DCMR.
  • Contribute to the development and monitoring of students' IEPs, Behavioral Intervention Plans (BIPs), and Functional Behavioral Assessments (FBAs), ensuring all documentation is completed within established guidelines.
  • Assess and grade students' work, accurately documenting their progress in grade books and meeting grading deadlines.
  • Participate actively in IEP meetings, reentry discussions, and other collaborative meetings with parents, students, and educational representatives, providing accurate reports on student progress.
  • Lead the classroom by offering guidance and support to program assistants and dedicated aides assigned to the classroom.
  • Understand how students' disabilities influence their behavior and learning capabilities, adapting intervention strategies to meet the requirements of their IEPs and BIPs.
  • Effectively manage and document student behavior through the implementation of behavior management systems and school policies, modeling appropriate conduct for students.
  • Proactively identify potential behavioral issues that may lead to crises or disrupt the learning environment, employing effective management techniques to mitigate disruptions.
  • Ensure student safety and security through vigilant supervision at all times.
  • Uphold student confidentiality in accordance with The Foundation Schools' confidentiality policies and procedures.
QUALIFICATIONS

Education, Experience, and Certification
  • A Bachelor's degree or higher is required, preferably in education, special education, or a related field; a Master's degree is preferred.
  • MSDE certification or eligibility for MSDE certification in special education and the appropriate grade band is required; Art and Physical Education instructors must have MSDE certification or eligibility in their content area.
  • Two or more years of experience in a special education environment or with emotionally disabled students or children with autism is preferred.
  • Familiarity with IDEA and its applications in educating students with special education needs and emotional or other disabilities is preferred.
  • Bilingual abilities (Spanish/English) are advantageous.
Physical, Interpersonal, and Cognitive Skills
  • Proficient in using basic office equipment such as computers, tablets, telephones, fax machines, and copiers.
  • Capable of completing reports and data entry using various computer programs.
  • Able to move and carry supplies; light lifting is required.
