Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Histotechnician II to join our team at MedStar Health. As a key member of our laboratory team, you will be responsible for preparing and preserving surgical tissue specimens and cytopathology specimens for microscopic examination and diagnosis.

Responsibilities
  • Prepare and preserve surgical tissue specimens and cytopathology specimens for microscopic examination and diagnosis.
  • Contribute to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adhere to department policies, procedures, quality standards, and safety standards.
  • Prepare paraffin sections of tissues, recognize technical problems related to tissue sectioning, and take corrective action.
  • Perform a wide variety of routine and special stains and techniques on surgical and autopsy pathology case material.
  • Evaluate normal/abnormal tissue components, orient and embed tissue specimens correctly for microscopic examination.
  • Assist in the preparation of frozen sections and provide direction in the preparation of decalcified bone tissue.
  • Decontaminate counter surfaces, instruments, and general work area according to laboratory protocol.
  • Prepare biopsy tracking logs, noting designated cases with various category codes.
Requirements
  • Associate's degree or higher-level degree or equivalent training in Histotechnology.
  • 3-4 years of experience in histotechnology, with ASCP Certification as a Histotechnician or eligibility required.
  • Verbal and written communication skills, basic computer skills, and considerable knowledge of principles, methods, and techniques of clinical laboratory science.
Working Conditions

This position requires working in a fast-paced laboratory environment with frequent exposure to chemicals, biological agents, and other hazardous materials. The successful candidate must be able to work independently and as part of a team, with excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
