POSITION TITLE:
ACCOUNTING TECHNICIAN

DEPARTMENT:
ACCOUNTING DEPARTMENT

POSITION SUMMARY:


Under the general oversight of the Controller, the incumbent will undertake intermediate financial, statistical, and accounting responsibilities. This role involves generating and aiding in the creation of financial analyses and reports, as well as maintaining electronic accounting records.

This is a non-exempt role.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Preparation and execution of accounts payable and/or accounts receivable.
  • Management of payables, receivables, retirement, and similar statistical records.
  • Assistance in the development of financial record-keeping and/or accounting systems.
  • Preparation of complex statistical and/or accounting reports from various sources.
  • Preparation of grant expenditure claims and deposits.
  • Account reconciliation and error investigation.
  • Clarification of regulations/procedures to departments and responding to inquiries using independent judgment.
  • Maintenance of strict confidentiality regarding employer and employee records.
  • Execution of miscellaneous related tasks to support departmental and Agency objectives.
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • A minimum of three years of experience in a public agency with proven ability to perform required job functions.
  • Strong communication skills to effectively convey complex issues to co-workers, management, and external services.
  • Proficient in using personal computers and financial databases, with a typing speed of 40 wpm and ability to operate a 10-key by touch.
  • Capability to work independently and collaboratively with others.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize effectively while meeting deadlines.

LICENSES AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Valid California driver's license, reliable transportation, and proof of minimum California vehicle insurance.
  • Ability to perform essential functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Physical ability to walk, stoop, and bend as needed; ability to lift and carry up to 20 pounds occasionally and to sit for up to 85% of scheduled working time.

EDUCATION AND CERTIFICATIONS:
  • AA Degree in Accounting with two years of accounting experience. Relevant work experience may be considered in lieu of formal education.
  • Knowledge of principles and methods of detailed financial record-keeping; familiarity with payroll taxes is a plus.
  • Working knowledge of EXCEL spreadsheets and accounting databases.
  • Ability to follow and explain oral and written instructions.
  • Capacity to maintain confidentiality of Agency and employee information.
