Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Physician Services Specialist to join our team at the University of Virginia. As a key member of our healthcare team, you will be responsible for providing exceptional medical care to our patients.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assess and manage patients in the clinic and other locations, including hospitals, assisted living facilities, and ambulatory surgery centers.
  • Work collaboratively with the medical director, administrative management, office manager, and nursing staff to facilitate patient management through the healthcare system.
  • Exercise independent judgment in assessing, diagnosing, and initiating medical processes or procedures commensurate with training and experience.
  • Perform and document comprehensive health histories and physical assessments on assigned patients.
  • Formulate diagnoses and identify health risk profiles of selected patients.
  • Communicate effectively with other members of the healthcare team to ensure seamless patient care.
  • Order and interpret diagnostic studies, such as x-rays and laboratory tests, in consultation with staff.
  • Perform procedures and surgeries within the scope of practice and UVA Health System credentials/privileges.
  • Order medications, treatments, and therapies in accordance with Virginia Prescriptive regulations.
  • Request consultations and initiate referrals to other physicians and healthcare providers as needed.
  • Evaluate and analyze patient responses to disease processes or therapeutic interventions.
  • Provide information and support to patients and families regarding disease processes and treatment plans.
  • Participate in on-call responsibilities and educate patients and families regarding planned diagnostic procedures, medications, and treatments.
  • Manage patients in accordance with established UVA Health System and UVA UPG policies and procedures.
  • Participate in hospital, nursing home, assisted living, or other institutional care setting practice as appropriate.
  • Examine systems and processes in populations and recommend strategies for improvement.
  • Promote timely and compassionate communication between families and healthcare teams.
  • Meet quality standards as determined by the Medical Director and/or UVA Health System.
  • Participate in group peer and other review activities.
  • Prepare and attend to reports, claims, and correspondence necessary for the performance of professional services.
  • Promote the professional practice of the group.
Requirements
  • Graduate of an accredited medical school with a degree of Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathy (DO).
  • Completion of an accredited residency in a chosen specialty.
  • Board certification in specialty (if newly graduated from residency, must be obtained within 2 years of graduation).
  • Unrestricted license to practice within the Commonwealth of Virginia.
  • Current DEA certificate without restriction.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience utilizing a personal computer and computerized scheduling.
