Position Overview

The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) plays a vital role in delivering patient-centered care within the General Surgery department. As an essential member of a multidisciplinary team, the APP is responsible for managing the healthcare needs of patients, ensuring adherence to the highest ethical standards, and supporting the overarching goals of Atrium Health.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conducts comprehensive medical histories, physical assessments, and formulates treatment plans for patients undergoing general surgery.
  • Independently rounds on both pre-operative and post-operative patients, evaluates inpatient consults, and assesses surgical candidacy.
  • Evaluates postoperative patients and select consults in the outpatient clinic.
  • Assists in various elective surgical procedures, including laparoscopic and open abdominal surgeries.
  • Provides mentorship and training to APP fellows, medical students, and PA/NP students.
  • Documents all patient interactions and clinical observations in a timely and accurate manner within the medical record.
  • Acts as an advocate for patients and their families.
  • Engages in continuous quality improvement initiatives and service excellence programs.
  • Follows access and productivity protocols to optimize patient care access.
  • Maintains adherence to care standards and protocols to ensure effective and innovative care delivery.
  • Embodies the core values of Atrium Health in all professional interactions.
  • Complies with Medical Group Minimum Work Standards.

Qualifications:

Graduation from an accredited Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant program is required. Candidates must be eligible for licensure as a NP or PA in the respective state, with prescriptive privileges and DEA license. BLS and ACLS certifications from AHA are mandatory, along with ATLS certification from ACS. Maintenance of Certification is essential.

Nurse Practitioners must possess a Master's Degree in Nursing or a Doctorate of Nursing Practice and be certified as an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner. AGACNP certification from a recognized certifying body is required for the population served.

Physician Assistants must hold a master's degree and certification from the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants.

Patient Population:

Demonstrates the ability to address age-specific issues and provide care for diverse patient demographics.

Protected Health Information:

Access to protected health information (PHI) is limited to what is necessary for job performance, adhering to confidentiality protocols.

Reporting Structure:

This position reports directly to the collaborating physician and/or APP leader.
