Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Victim/Witness Specialist to join our team at Brown County, WI. As a key member of our department, you will play a vital role in providing direct services to crime victims and witnesses, ensuring they receive the support and resources they need during this challenging time.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide court appearance notification services to crime victims and witnesses, including notification of scheduling changes.
  • Offer information and assistance with Crime Victim Compensation, including application completion.
  • Connect crime victims and witnesses with social service agencies and programs that can aid in their recovery and cooperation with the prosecution.
  • Offer escort services to court proceedings, provide information about the proceedings, and assist with Witness Fee applications.
  • Ensure employers of crime victims cooperate with the criminal justice process, minimizing employee loss of pay and benefits.
  • Provide final disposition documentation to crime victims and witnesses, including information on parole notification, sexual offender registration, restitution, and appeal.
  • Assist crime victims and their families in providing information to the court regarding the economic, physical, and psychological impact of the crime.
  • Compile restitution verification for submission to the court.
  • Ensure the expeditious return of stolen or personal property from law enforcement agencies.
  • Compose and type Victim/Witness Assistance Program correspondence regarding victim impact statements, crime victim compensation, restitution, scheduled court hearings, and other services.
  • Compile data and prepare reports in compliance with department regulations, state statutes, and constitutional law.
  • Maintain a calendar or record of appointments, court hearings, meetings, and other related events.
  • Make appointments and issue reminders as instructed.
Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent, plus 2 or more years of additional coursework in Criminal Justice, Sociology, Psychology, or a related field, plus one year of experience in a criminal justice, social service, or community agency.
  • Knowledge of the special needs and problems of crime victims, witnesses, and/or family members.
  • Knowledge of or demonstrated interest in the Criminal Justice and Juvenile Justice Systems.
  • Knowledge of community resources.
  • Knowledge of general office skills, practices, and procedures.
  • Knowledge of English grammar, spelling, and legal terminology.
  • Ability to perform one's duties without exhibiting bias, prejudice, or intolerance.
  • Ability to make basic arithmetic calculations.
  • Ability to answer inquiries effectively without judgment and maintain competence in stressful situations.
  • Ability to interpret legal documents for determining required action.
  • Ability to maintain the confidentiality of department practices.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to work independently and organize and plan work assignments.
  • Ability to follow complex oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to type at a minimum rate of 40 net words per minute.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with office attorneys, support staff, law enforcement, social service providers, and the public.
